Apple iPhone 5 release could be delayed: reports

After Apple announced the dates for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the focus has shifted to the old hobbyhorse of tech websites - the iPhone 5 release date. And there is apparent consensus that iPhone 5 may not be launched in June as was expected generally.






Gadget market observers have taken cues from Apple's statement in which it made the WWDC announcement. "At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” the statement quoted Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, as saying. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”
Tech websites read meaning into Apple's focus on iOS to infer that Apple may not release iPhone 5 in June. The reason is that Apple has designed the WWDC event as a software show, not as a hardware show. The WWDC will be held from June 6 through June 10 at San Francisco’s Moscone West.





"The iPhone 5 will not be making an appearance at the event, we’re now hearing," MG Siegler of Techcrunch said. But there could be other reasons too. "The iPhone 5 launch may be delayed in order to give Apple enough time to iron out any issues with the iOS 5, which is gradually turning out to be one of the most important iOS since its launch back in 2006," writes ITProPortal.
Apple has been said to be working on a "completely re-designed" iPhone for debut in summer 2011 with a four-inch display to take on the larger screens found on some of the latest smartphones running Google's Android operating system. The gadget market is abuzz with leaked images, specifications and features of the much-anticipated product.
The next generation iPhone is said to cost less and might feature a new integrated SIM card that would be easily configurable on any supported carrier, 9to5Mac ahd reported earlier. The iPhone 5 may also carry an upgraded A4 processor, already dubbed the A5 chip, in addition to a new Gobi WWAN chip already found in the Verizon iPhone, designed to work on both CDMA and GSM networks, it said.
Other rumored iPhone 5 specifications include a multi-core A5 CPU powered with a dual-core graphics core and the addition of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

Read this a few days ago, I think it was Mobileman on here who suggested it may not be released until 2012 a short while ago.

Hopefully Android will tidy up it's app process in light of the recent malware infections. Android should take the pole position purely because it can be used by numerous manufacturers, the only problem is quality of handset as Apple invest in a single SKU (other than memory size options), other manufacturers release phones for all segments so less investment in flagship products. I have yet to use a phone that has a better UI than the iPhone and this includes the Nexus S, Galaxy S and Desire HD2.

I found the iPhone 4 to be a massive improvement over the 3GS so I can wait until next year if that's when the new one will be released.

I'm still on the 3GS, was waiting for the 5 in summer to upgrade but with this news may jump ship to an Android for a while to see how it goes.

They should release a nano phone then release them every two years. So an Iphone one year then the next year the revision of the nano and so on. It would marry up to 2 year contracts then.

I would prefer a two yearly cycle myself. Fits in with contracts better.

I don't have phones on contracts. I have contracts but get a better deal on the airtime and buy my hardware outright and recycle it regularly.

My personal opinion is they will carry on the yearly cycle BUT iPhones will be out in September from this year. March iPad, September iPhone etc. They are already making noises that iOS5 won't be out until the autumn, which would appear to back my theory up.

I did the tesco 12 month contract with the iphone, I don't mind waiting a few months over the contract, but if it pushes back to 2012 I won't be renewing my contract just for the iphone definitely.

I'm using an android device at the moment (San Francisco), does me perfect, but I miss my iphone just a little bit.

Apple are getting complacent and are doomed to failure in my opinion.

I vision a time like when the Xbox booted Sony off their comfortable thrown.

Iphones seem old hat now and I really fail to see what mind blowing innovations they excite people with now. Ofcourse their will still be the die hards who get an errection at anything with the name Apple on it.

I am totally happy with my iPhone 4 and iPad 1 so two years between upgrades is a much better bet..

I don't see the next iPhone being a big improvement over the current one, like the 3GS to the 3G.

I've got a slight feeling it won't be called the iPhone 5 either.

It might be because you've bought a shit load of apps at so many £, you might as well keep with apple and transfer the apps over to the new phone. That would be one of my reasons with staying with an Iphone

Yeah I thought that was going to be a problem too, but I'll probably keep the 3GS and use it as an itouch / backup phone.

I agree. Got a desire at the mo and my contract with VM is up in June so hoping they'll want to entice me into a new contract with a better android at a decent monthly tariff. If they don't I'm not bothered really.
