Is it correct that these cannot be moved or used via an SD card and they remain on the phones internal memory instead?
I want a new phone but it seems ridiculous that these apps cannot be moved..?

Some market apps not all can be moved it is down to the app developer to implement this option in the app. If your phone is rooted you can move almost all to an SD card partition using titanium backup from the marketplace. Do not move apps with Widgets that you use though as the widget will stop working

Get an app called movetosd, it'll find all the apps that can be moved to SD card and let you do it very simply.
The best solution I've found is some Roms will mount a pre-formatted second partition on your SD card whilst booting and then pretty much all apps can be moved there. I have a 1gb ext2 partition on my SD card with all my apps on it (even ones that don't natively allow installation to sd).
With the correct ROM you just install link2sd or apps2d
livesey, yes it works on unrooted phones as its an app off the store but not all apps can be moved
Yeah this really winds me up, as I have a desire, which only comes with about 150mb.
I have the low phone storage warning up all the time, the only apps I have on the phone storage are:
Facebook (30mb)
Adobe Flash Player (12mb)
Maps (12mb)
Gmail (5mb)
Market (3mb)
some other small apps that can't go to sd (17mb)
This comes to 79mb, although apps2SD only says I have 13mb left! What uses the rest of the space?
Is there anything I can do besides root the phone? as I hardly have any apps apart from the standard ones you need.

nope root it its simple mate, just search for unrevoked then download rom manager from the marketplace, partititon your card and use titanium backup to move the apps. this will void any warranty you have though
The application data will remain on the phone, its easy to move the application but if you have more data than app you are going to end up stuck sooner or later. If your phone is rooted you can use A2SD which auto puts all apps on the SD
My Desire is rooted but have had low storage warning loads of times. I have a 16gb sd card in and still had problems but found MemoryUp Professional ver 3.5 solved the problem great for me.
a percentage of your app is still stored in memory so larger apps can still take up loads of memory even after moving it to SD. There are roms that can move the entire app (and system files) to the SD, I think they are classed as data2sd or something. I recall having the same problems on my desire but since i moved to MIUI i haven't noticed it happening, dunno if thats just coincidence as I dont install as much stuff now the novelty has worn off.
I dont understand what is meant by rooted and un rooted phone.
How do you know if it is or not?
I've got a desire being delivered tomorrow from vodafone.
Rooting is like the Jailbreak for Iphone mate
Rooting gives you access the the partition that the operating system lives on. It also updates the boot loader to let you install a different ROM (different version of Android etc).
To Root your Desire you need to get to use Unrevoked from here http://unrevoked.com/#desire
Install the drivers as it tells you too on. You also need to download HTC Sync and then uninstall it. Once you've done that just run Unrevoked with your phone in USB Debug mode and it will root it.
Then you can download custom ROMS from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328 - I suggest you stick to one that works 100% or even just get used to the phone unrooted first.
Newer androids have a much larger internal memory. My defy had 1GB and so does my nexus so this stops being an issue. The desire has had it's day. It's out of date now

There's no denying it was ahead of the game when it came out. The game has overtaken it somewhat now though.

Am I right in assuming that the newer Desire S cannot yet be rooted?
