Phone o2. They will permanently unlock it for £20.

Will a tesco sim not just work? They use the o2 network??

No, if it's locked to o2 then it won't work with any other carrier - even if they piggy-back the network.

I've been with tescomobile and O2 for the last 12 months but am looking to leave as not impressed with the 3G reception I get. I'm in the South Wirral area if that helps.

I had to update with Ipad baseband if you want to do it the unofficial way on 3g. Not sure if this applies on 4.2.1 on 3gs though

Official unlock is far better than any software unlock. If you can, avoid using the iPad baseband. I have heard you lose all GPS capabilities, the phone will then rely on WiFi or cell data for positioning.

Apparently some teams are working on being able to downgrade this iPad baseband ? I have read somewhere (cannot remember so dont have a source as yet) that this will be the only way to downgrade the baseband by upgrading to this first then downgrading.

I am unsure how true this is but if I find the source again I will post a link to it.

As of now you are 100% correct though .

That's not strictly true. Giffgaff uses O2, and you can use an O2 locked handset on giffgaff. I know because I've done it.

I did that the other day but had a text back saying they wanted to charge £15 for doing it so I didn't bother, so can anyone point me in the right direction to unlock it from 02 with Tesco mobile so that I can use a 3 sim instead

I've just spoken to Tesco mobile and because my 12 month contract is up they unlock it for you for FREE so waiting now for an unlock code from them.

Its not a code that you get but authorisation that your unlock code is active
Once you get the message. Hook your phone in itunes and sync and should unlock. That failing, update to the latest firmware 4.3.3 and restore and it will unlock.

Thanks for the reply Swifty, my iphone has been jailbroken and the itunes I use is an older version so would it still be OK to unblock it without losing anything on the phone?

    I assume you mean unlock.
Well if the sync has not unlocked your handset. You will need to update the firmware to the latest and restore to activate it. Which case you might lose the jailbreak.
But you can jailbreak 4.3.3 if need be.
