I my self grew up in the middle of the conflict in NI. Yes the word car bomb was branded by the media i will agree. I also often heard the type of device used such as pipe bombs, petrol bombs these are all IED devices. However they are a certain type of device with in the IED tree that are well known so rather than using the more broad sweeping brush of IED they where called after the actual type device that was used. This also helped work out who had planted the said devices as different paramilitary groups within NI where more a custom to one type of device than others.
I see What you are saying but in Afghanistan there are so many of these devices being found every day that it would not be practical to try and describe each our to even start considering the difference between each type of device. So they get hit with the broad sweeping term of IED i do not believe that it takes the menace out of what these objects are. Also a lot of the information that the media see and hears out there comes from the military so it is militarized in the way its past on.
In the UK they get a lot more information from the public where a normal person on the street is more likely to call such device our what they have witnessed a bomb so they will then quote it as a bomb.
I do totally agree tho in what you say it doesn't matter who our where they are made they all have the same intent behind them. As said above the people of Afghanistan are not stupid they are in fact very intelligent and resourceful.
