You thought about using an original xbox with a Linux setup and 2 hori sticks?
Defo the cheapest way, although not quite as authentic.

Inspired by this thread, I have decided to make a change in my cab and slap a PC in there, I have an old AMD 64-4000 spare that I will strip down, and Ive wired up my JPAC board in readiness.
I'm still not sure about what front end to use though....Ive downloaded Hyperspin and a shit load of artwork etc, but although Im impressed with what it can do, im sort of left thinking its a bit too much, and it takes ages to go through the lists of games to choose one. I think I'm going to have to look for something a little more simple.

I've got an original xbox as well but I was wanting to run other emulators and just thought it would easier off a pc but will take a look at the xbox setup although I think I'd prefer a pc to be honest I've got enough old ones knocking around lol

I've been looking for a nice front end too, hyperspin looks good but I know what you mean, I was also going to look to see if I could get some basic juke box software for it, got lots of ideas just lacking cash and knowledge right now but getting there, let me know front end wise if you find anything good, I've looked at loads the last week but to be honest I'm after ease of use now but still want it to look half decent, will post anything I find that looks half decent

I have a touchscreen jukebox that runs Nordbeat Jukebox.

    http://www.nordbeat.com/dnn/Products...6/Default.aspx

It's probably primarily for touch screens but its a nice interface to use.

Looks good mate, I was thinking of someway to get spotify to display on the arcade monitor, by I'm way ahead of myself now, all I actually want is to cane Bubble Bobble for a few days and re-live my miss spent youth :-) but a jukebox is definitely in the future plans :-)

Quick update, pc is built, mame, mala and hyperspin installed, at the moment can't decide on the front end just downloaded all the snaps and videos for mame and currently prefer mala, have connected the pc to the arcade screen and it looks lush :-) used a vga to cga converter from the bloke who spamed the forum above, works a treat really pleased with it, just waiting for my mate to cut me the piece of wood for the console now and I'm ready to go :-)

One quick question though anyone know of a decent place to get arcade type stickers? Ideally want some for the console and some big ones for the side of the cab and maybe the marquee seen a few places just wondered if anyone could recommend a decent supplier, will post pics as soon as the console is done :-)

Mine is in a similar state, but although I planned to use Hyperspin, I found that the PC just isnt powerful enough to handle it (AMD 64-4000), and the transition between game selection changes wasnt quick enough for my liking. I have moved over to "Maximus Arcadius" now, which is a little less bulky, but still covers the games/systems I want.

I ended up using mala for mine in the end. As good as hyperspin is, you need a beefy pc to get the most of it and tbh j just found mala quicker to get to the games that I want than hyperspin.

Yea I have to say hyperspin seems a bit busy for my liking, I like the preview videos but they don't work with mala, will have a look at maximus arcade as don't think I did the other night

I'm only running an old P4 3ghz so its not the quickest system but as soon as I've got the cash I will buy a quicker system for it, the only other annoying thing on my cab is it has a big led display on the top of the marquee but all my googleing says it can't be re-programmed, shame as its quality but pointless as all it does now is scroll test and patterns lol

I'm going to have to stick to mala for now my pc is not up to much, but to be honest I like it, I've set up 3 lists of games so the boys can add there own favourites in and it works quite well, wired up all the buttons yesterday in an old piece of wood and had a quick go, and I LOVE IT :-) wish I had done it years ago!

Got a cheap track ball of eBay to use as well so all things being good will be finished to a reasonable standard next week

Yea I've taken a few, I will get some posted later when I'm on a pc, like I say its way off finished but playable, probably should have not made it playable as now there's a distraction when I go in there!

Got some photos on flickr like I say way off finished, got a new piece of wood coming Sunday from my mate, he's a chippie and its got some angled cuts so I thought id let him do it! also got some black vinyl to put over it then re mount the buttons, got a rollar ball to put into it as well and the 1/2 player buttons, all ive done is mount a few to make sure the spacings are ok, sadly I drew it all in CAD lol, joysticks are going on the left of the buttons now as it just doesn't feel right as it was.

all thats left after that is to get a new marque and stickers and stuff, might just stencil some stuff on the sides as its so expensive to get decent stuff printed, will do one day just not yet, anyway will post some more pics as I go along.
