Help Recommend me an access point gizmo please!

I've got piss poor wireless reception in a couple of rooms, so I was looking at adding an access point via a spare ethernet cable I've got from my router.
I can't use homeplugs as the rooms in question are on a different circuit than the main one, so this is I think the only way to go.
Anyone use one or recommend one please?

    Love ya.

Do you have a spare wireless router? I have a Homehub V2 downstairs and a Business Hub upstairs as I had a spare one. If you need to buy one then follow beermans advice

I've got a couple of these mate

    N150 Wireless Router
got them from ebuyer when they had them although they were branded Tenda. Bounces a wireless signal from a media player RJ45 connection to one then hops to the other one linked to my main network/internet.

    Quite easy to setup etc.

DD-WRT is custom FW which can be flashed to certain routers. It enables advanced features including turning up the power so signal reaches further Search the router here:

DD-WRT is a Linux based alternative OpenSource firmware suitable for a great variety of WLAN routers and embedded systems. The main emphasis lies on providing the easiest possible handling while at the same time supporting a great number of functionalities within the framework of the respective hardware platform used.

Wouldn't ddwrt results vary massively on the hardware it is installed on? Fitting better aftermarket aerials can help. Apparently there is a legal limit to the gain allowed which is why they use a non standard connector (reverse polarity sma). You can get gender benders to allow an aerial with much higher gain to screw in, although this is something I would like to test but haven't got round to.

Would love to hear any good suggestions myself.

From what I've read regarding backtrack and the like, the gain is set as a limitation within the driver software. There are scripts for linux you can run that apparently change region settings though.

Googled this one a while ago as my wireless unit was limited to less than it's full potential.

If you want them to do what you said in your OP, they won't need flashing to do the job. They're capable of being set to Access Point/Repeater/Bridged mode with their original firmware mate.

That is true, but different routers will have different components. Just for example, some routers use mimo technology, some use diverse rx/tx antenna, and I would bet some have higher rated components than others. I would say ddwrt should let you unleash the full potential of a compatible router, but not all compatible routers will be equal.
