Kit required:
1L Vodka (do not use cheap shit, use medium to top shelf, I used Russian Standard)
500g Skittles (I used 3 pouches of 174g)
6 bowls/containers to store separated skittles in
Measuring jug
5 or 6 300ml+ sterilised containers with sealed lids, depends if your Skittles have the blue flavour or not (plastic water bottle, jam jar etc)
Funnels (optional)
Coffee filters (I filtered each vodka twice so used 12)
5 or 6 flasks to store the vodka in (I looked for ages and the best value I found was here: Roma Bottle 250ml: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/318DRmefVHL.@@AMEPARAM@@318DRmefVHL
Steps:
N.B. I was not precise with the amount of skittles I used, you can count out x amount per bottle. The more skittles you use the stronger the flavour, I like strong flavours so used them all.
1. Separate the skittles into colours
2. Split the vodka evenly between the sterilised containers
3. Add skittles to each bottle, screw up tight and shake like mad
4. (Optional) if you are in a rush then put these containers in hot water/dishwasher to aid dissolving
5. Shake several times a day until there are no skittles left in the bottom of the container, there will be a scummy froth at the top
6. Once no skittles are left in the containers filter the first liquid through coffee filters into the measuring jug, check if it is clear with no scum, if need be then filter again
*When filtering make sure the container you filter into is completely clean to ensure a pure end result*
7. Once you are happy with the clarity of the liquid then use clean funnel to pour into storage bottle
8. Repeat 6 and 7 until you have your Skittles vodka!
9. Chill and taste the rainbow in style
Notes:
I found the filtering was a bit of a bitch. It takes ages and gets to a point where it stops working even if you scrape the bottom with a spoon. Fold the filter paper into a cone so the bottom is a point, this helps the flow. Once the liquid stops filtering through I twisted the top of the filter and slowly and gently squeezed the vodka through. If you aren't careful it will split or some scum will get through.
The dissolved Skittles will increase the volume of the vodka, in my case I had 165ml of vodka which turned into approx 200ml.
You should be able to replace skittles with most other sweets, I will be experimenting.
My first attempt:
Bad picture I'm afraid. Was a very messy process when it came to filtering it but was happy with the result. The peachy colour is orange, they must have changed the colouring for it. The skittles I used had a new blue colour which looks cool.
Tastes lovely, I used a litre of Russian standard which must have helped. Could easily drink a whole bottle of this straight, so sweet but still full strength vodka.
Anyone else tried this or similar flavourings?
