360 stopped reading discs

Strange 1 this, I was playing L.A Noire last night but forgot to knock the 360 off, got up today & put DIRT 3 in but it wont read it. Tried a few more games that have always worked but none of them will read anyone got any ideas?

does it just sit on the dash and say 'open tray' or does it attempt to boot?

is it flashed? if so what drive

Yeah just says Open tray, it's flashed but not sure what drive, ive had it about 4-5 years

When you say "forgot to knock it off", do you mean the it was left on in-game overnight?
I'm thinking if it was reading from the disk overnight as the game was playing and loading sound effects, music etc then maybe the laser has burned out overnight?

It was in game but i had pressed the xbox button on the controller before i forgot to nock it off, so dont think the game will of been reading the disc.

U might of done the dash up date, instead of turning it off. Try signing in to live to see if it asks for the dash update. the new update re-flashes the DVD drive.

try an original disc see if that loads or a dvd

My Xbox has been banned for about 3 years m8, so havent done an update by mistake

Anyways, strange 1 this. Just got in from work, fired DIRT 3 on to test before i tried an original & guess what, loaded straight away???

Confused now ...lol

Nope.. Deffo Gremlins !! Its a known fault in early 360s and you did say u had it about 5 years... Thats just before M$ did the X-Gimp fix to sort the gremlins...

I almost replied with this answer earlier, and then thought about it and after I re-read it it sounded wrong.
Does ther laser heating up distort the lens or something, and if so, wouldn't that damage it permanently rather then being OK once it had cooled?

I think your right, I'm just not sure how it would happen.

Anything being on for 24hours with heat will expand. Plastic or glass, even the solder that holds the diodes on could crack.

Could be anything.

I thought you meant then lense itself had expanded and distorted then cooled back to being able to focus again.
This is what I thought earlier when I re-read and then it sounded impossible.

..and yeah, I now vote Gremlins!

doesnt the 360 have the shutdown option which dimms the screen after 5 mins them shuts completly down after 30 mins of inactivity .... sure mine does !?! big3
