1936 saw the introduction of the first-ever light-gun game — Ray-O-Lite Rifle was a duck-hunting game from Seeburg, a company that specialized in vacuum tube jukeboxes.
So it looks like Nintendo’s Zapper ancestry goes way back to the 1930s, when the first light guns appeared after the development of light-sensing vacuum tubes. In the first light gun game — Ray-O-Lite — players shot at small moving targets mounted with light sensors using a gun that emitted a beam of light. When the beam struck a sensor, the targets — ducks, coincidentally — registered the hit and a point was scored and displayed.
Later on a dog was available as a sold separately accessory. Quite the coincidence.
