You shouldn't have to, but try restoring to 4.2.1 first?
If I recall correctly I had the same problem with my iPad and I just slapped it into DFU mode first. iTunes said it had found a device in recovery mode etc. Then just shift clicked (or whatever it is for mac) on restore and chose the 4.3.3 ipsw and away it went.
Right, still no luck using mac so tried on laptop with win7 and latest itunes and still getting error but now it says the error is 3194 which accordong to apples support can be resolved by updating to the latest itunes (which I have!), do you think its a bug in itunes on both mac and windows? I find it hard to believe?
Have you tried removing any mention of Apple servers from your hosts file?

Zoots you are an iPad God! Thanks very much
Yeah - I remembered I had to have a root about in there too after TinyUmbrella had added them.
Nice one - glad you got it sorted.
