AVG free version, never had a problem in 5 years of using it.

Just use Microsoft own security essentials and malwarebytes. Both are great.

+1 Avast here, use it at work (installed on over 200+ machines) and at home, never had a problem

If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

I recommend MSE too... but for people that think free AV's are no good I recommend ESET NOD32.

I currently use Malwarebytes, MSE and also Advanced System Care (the free version from download.com). The combination gives me pretty comprehensive protection.

MSE + Malwarebytes + Standard User Account if you're using windows.

Be careful mixing and matching av and spyware/malware products. For instance if you use MSE and Malwarebytes then under settings in MSE, add the path to the following to excluded processes:

    mbam.exe
    mbamgui.exe
    mbamservice.exe

and add the path to your malwarebytes folder to the 'Excluded files and locations'

Kaspersky if we are talking paid for.
MSSE if we are looking at free products.

I am moving away from MSE now as it has allowed a few infections to remain on a system which Avast has picked up. I think Avast offers better rootkit protection as well as a boot time scan feature so I use that now.

Malwarebytes for scanning when I know there is an infection.

Eset NOD Smart Security if you are paying for the protection.

    Do they fuck!

ESET and malwarebytes are the best as many seasoned pros will tell you

I get sophos through the license at work, seems to work very well indeed. The firewall is a bit needy with approvals for access when software has been updated, better safe than sorry I suppose.
