    Tech ATM Card Skimmer

Went to the local ATM today and found this attached to the NatWest machine.

    It wasn't there yesterday.

    img20110829134653.jpg

...... I passed on sticking my card in.

I gave it a good yank but it would only push forwards and a nervous looking person took exception to me taking a picture of it.

I discovered these when I got home.

Seeing they get 3k$ I should of kicked it off.. !

Though perhaps the carders couldn't get it out either as there were Velcro strips above the keyboard but no camera ?

And you didnt feel any need to report it???

I would have gone straight in the bank or called the old bill.
How pissed off would you be if it was your mum or wifes account that got scammed?

Couldn't get it off. It was either push it forward and it gave way showing how they had hacked away at the slot which you can see in the pic or it was caught pulling it out which makes me think the person who put it there could not do it either or was disturbed. It also appeared to had a lip of sorts into the metal card slot and teeth on the outer edges.

I've see loads of after the event on ATM's where the plastic guard has been cut out and all you have is the card feed all metal no plastic (which sits on a variable screw mount and usually pushed back to make way for the skimmer.) but this was the first I've seen actually with the skimmer still in place.

In fact the HSBC on the corner of Old Street and Goswell Road in EC1 never has any plastic and is always inset as if a skimmer has just been removed !

Yes. They are only open on normal working days and then only normal hours.

. The manager of the Morrison's store to which this ATM was attached tried but was referred to the bank which in turn was referred to an Indian call centre who told him to report it to the branch.. IN the end he pulled the plug.

I think 999 would have done it seeing as it is a high priority crime.

i wouldnt have thought anything was off, looks pretty normal to me. I have heard of skimmers before but I expected them to look a little more obtrusive than this.

The store Manager wants his bollocks kicking for not reporting on 999 as a matter of urgency, they could have set up a sting, they take this stuff really seriously.

Totally agree. his colleague was really complacent with it and said the machine was targeted a lot as there's no cctv coverage along the wall he even said he had found the cameras before now that they stick above the keyboard.

    Thanks to JonEp

I wonder how many cash machines still use magnetic strip, i got my card done a few years ago and all the bank would do is harp on about chip n pin cant be copied etc etc. Might test a few covering my chip with tape

Someone tried it recently. The average is about 1 in ten that will still use the card with no chip, rising to about 1 in five in city centres.

    Thanks to stimpy
