Iphone 4 and roaming

Can anyone advise why i seem to be getting ripped off abroad with my iphone4?
I travel to europe nearly every week and im on contract with tesco but use a PAYG three sim when away because they are supposed to only charge £1.28 mb for data roaming.
Thing is i turn off location services and data roaming as soon as i land abroad and turn the data roaming back on when i want to check a email e.tc
How the hell does my £10 credit disapear after only looking at about 3 mails and 6 web pages? surely 1mb is quite a lot of pages on a mobile phone?
Just doesnt add up?
Any ideas?

I have no idea but i know my wife burnt £20. of credit on my Mifi dongle in 5 mins in Egypt and all she was doing was checking facebook and email but the amount of data it was transferring was shocking.. it must be all the background stuff going on..

If the sites aren't mobile sites then they will be loading the same amount of data as they would if you used a desktop or laptop, that could explain it. Mobile sites are generally optimised for load time so have far less data to download.
