Samsungs and LG's are the best ones, Samsung having the edge due to better network streaming support.
Other makes should be avoided, mainly because I don't think that any other make/model can handle NTFS devices over the usb port (such as pen drives or hard drives full of hd movies).
I have a Samsung BD-C5500 and also a BD-C6500, and they work extremely well, both of them can play bd-r media, multiple mkv's on bd-r media, mkv 720p and 1080p and streaming mkv's over the network from my server running TVMobili.
If you get one for streaming, avoid the Samsung streaming utility, and go straight for TVMobili, its the bollocks.
since the Samsung BD-C5500 has build in wlan - is it possible to stream 1080p over it?
I also have a BD-C5500 and although it's advertised with 'wifi ready' it's actually needing an adaptor for that, which isn't cheap to get the right one that works. Apart from that, it's a great bit of kit. I also have a galaxy S2 and using the free all share app on it, I can wirelessy stream videos/pics etc. from my phone or from the player to my phone as I've hooked up the BD player to my network (Via a cable). It also sees my nas drive which I hold all my films etc. on.
Got mine in cash convertors for £49.99.

are there any cheaper options without streaming?
the older samsungs dont seem to have 1080p support :-/
How about something like this instead if you don't actually need the blue ray player?

uh that sounds interesting. its true - i dont need the bd player itself.
i cant find the audio outputs - does it have spdif/optical?
I ordered one last week but because of the super saver delivery it won't be dispatched until Monday, but when it gets here I will let you know what it's like. I bought one because it's ideal for in the bedroom, I wasn't too bothered about streaming either & for £25 it's worth a try.
it seems like it only has coaxial audio out :-/
i´m looking at the Measy A1HD - that one has optical audio out and is in the same price range.
I got the wifi version of the Samsung for £80 something quid from John Lewis last month.....only problem is, my router is gay and for some unknown reason is blocking UDP 1800, so I have been unable to stream over wifi to it....it just wont see the TVMobili server, whereas plug the cable in (which comes from a seperate network switch), it will. Most annoying...but no fault of the Samsungs.
I've got the LG BD350 Blu ray which plays Divx & MKV's from USB. Paid £90 from Argos for mine. I've had a few MKV's that it won't play but it's been good on the whole. No optical out though, coaxial only and no internet connectivity.
if you dont need the BD then I would go for this all day, USB or streaming and Optical out

after digging a bit more, i´m gonna get the Asus O!Play mini.
Has everything that i need (1080p 24hz 5.1 optical), gets firmware updates by asus .. and has a proper guarantee, not like the china deals.
42€ new.

If nature always takes the easiest route, what's easier...?
The creation of billions of galaxies each containing trillions of stars each with their own solar systems, some with planets that have evolved civilisations with billions of different life forms. OR The creation of just your imagination?
