    OK, so it does work.
I had a feeling it was to do with Ajax/JS, so I changed the settings in user control panel to the basic or standard editor rather than the enhanced one and that's got it half right in as much as you can get line breaks now. It's still not right - smileys missing in some browsers, image/spoiler/quote boxes missing, source button missing - but whatever problem there is with the iOS JavaScript and the new enhanced editor in VB 4.1.4 (CKEditor) it isn't fucking up the line breaks on that setting, so we're good to go.
Armed with this info, I went mooching, and there's a file to upload for a fix before the next VB release that will have it included unless Apple fix it first for mobile Safari.

The above link takes you to the bug tracker where there's a modified js file and instructions in the thread if anyone on the admin team fancies giving it a whirl. I haven't got involved over there because I can't fucking stick that lot.

But yeah, for now, it seems changing that setting (Settings > General Settings > Message Editor Interface > basic or standard editor) is a quick workaround for iOS and the new CKEditor.
Another way some are seeing results is disabling JavaScript in Safari, but it's not working for me.

This is the CKEditor live demo. If you visit it on iPhone or iPad it'll tell you your not using Safari 3 so fuck off. Disable the culprit JS and it'll tell you it's needed for all the features, but you can still have a HTML play. But of course you can't because there's nothing implemented to call the iOS keyboard..

This is a very interesting thread over on their forum which is pretty much the nuts and bolts of the whole thing - they blame Apple.

Hope some of you find any of this useful and can post on your iPhones/iPads again until there's a universal solution.

    Thanks to Zoots

Good post, for the record this happens in Android too and has been driving me nuts.

Have changed to the standard editor for now.

    Cheers,
