Help VW Golf Mk3 TDi lack of power / VAG-COM Fault codes

    Hi all,

My Mk3 Golf TDi has suddenly developed a lack of power (as if the turbo is not working) the car doesnt cut out or stutter, everything feels normal and revs increase but much slower than they did before (no kick). I have checked all pipes and air filter and some solenoid valves?? that look like they have something to do with the turbo/intercooler/waste gate??

I ran Vag-Com and got the following fault codes:

    Chassis Type: 1H - VW G/J/V Mk3
    Scan: 01,02,03,08,15,25,56

    Address 01 -------------------------------------------------------
    Controller: 028 906 021 GG
    Component: 1,9l R4 EDC 00SG 1432
    Coding: 00002
    Shop #: WSC 01317
    3 Faults Found:
    01237 - Fuel Shut-Off Valve (N109)
    04-00 - Mechanical Malfunction
    01265 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (N18)
31-00 - Open or Short to Ground
    00553 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
31-00 - Open or Short to Ground

I reset them and they all cleared, ran the car again and tried booting it, but again no real kick and lack of boost.. I then connected Vag-Com again and got only this fault code:

Control Module Part Number: 028 906 021 GG
    Component and/or Version: 1,9l R4 EDC 00SG 1432
    Software Coding: 00002
    Work Shop Code: WSC 01317
    1 Fault Found:
    01237 - Fuel Shut-Off Valve (N109)
    04-00 - Mechanical Malfunction

The above fault code will not clear after a run. Is this likely to be the cause?? If so any pointers please?? The MAF and EGR fault codes could be a red herring I guess if I have fiddled with the pipes and hoses previously.. Those codes do now not come back as an error..

    Thanks in advance..
    Jon

The part (N109 - Fuel Shut off Valve) is 028 130 135F priced at £57.04 Inc. It also requires a seal 068 130 139 which is £1.09 Inc.

I know it was in America but the basics of the engine will likely be the same. The Jetta is a Golf Saloon so no worries there.

The pictures you posted look like the bad boy, some in that forum I posted appear to have had success by removing it and cleaning/reseating it.

If you want to test it, take it out and remove the plunger+spring, refit it back and test drive it, be aware that you won't be able to turn the engine off, you'll have to stall it.

How do you draw that conclusion?

I also wouldn't advocate buying anything other than a genuine MAF.

I'd try running it without the maf wire attached if you suspect it. If it is the maf, it'll likely run a bit better without it (as the ECU will use a preset value) and if it isn't the maf it'll probably run a bit worse without it

MAFs are notorious on mk3 and 4.s

    ebay have second hand ones

or just srpay carb cleaner into yours and try that./

I bought genuine one for my mk4 for £70 and it was amazing the difference!

I agree MAF's are a huge problem, I'd like to see them changed alongside cam belt or something as a service item.

I've never thought cleaning them was a great solution but I guess worth a try.

A new MAF will for sure see an improvement in your car but on this occasion I think you've got an issue with that valve.

due to symptoms stated and it being a common fault i went for the maf, can't see the valve causing this, infact i think the engine would be racing a bit with the valve stuck, and the egr is not even needed.

I think this ended up being the cut off valve but I'm sure he'll be along when work permits to update.
