I had an error with my ps3 last year with the HDD and got it repaired. Now it's completely broke, I am just wondering can I just purchase a new PS3 HDD and will it work or do I need to anything else. Any help appreciated.

depends on model, i think the newer ones with the smaller NAND can't boot without the firmware files on the hdd first
edit : ah apparently that was only a bug with firmware v3.56 its been fixed now. NAND sizes if anyones interested:
* FAT NAND SIZE
o CECHA = 256MB
o CECHB = 256MB
o CECHC = 256MB
o CECHE = 256MB
o CECHG = 256MB
o CECHH = 16MB
o CECHJ = 16MB
o CECHK = 16MB
o CECHL = 16MB
o CECHM = 16MB
o CECHP = 16MB
o CECHQ = 16MB
* SLIM NAND SIZE
o CECH-20..A = 16MB
o CECH-20..B = 16MB
o CECH-21..A = 16MB
o CECH-21..B = 16MB
o CECH-250.A = 16MB
o CECH-250.B = 16MB
o CECH-250.A = 16MB
o CECH-250.B = 16MB
o CECH-251.A = 16MB
o CECH-251.B = 16MB
Thats what I thought but I have never done either, am sure someone will help you but prob best if you say if yours is a fat or slim.
although if your ps3 is currently stuck on 3.56 i guess your out of luck
my ps3 is on latest firmware (3.70 i think) an its the fat 40gb version
should be good to go then, good luck
would u reccomend brand new hdd or 2nd hand? and does it matter what capacity the hdd is?
can take upto 1tb, best get a shiny one so this doesn't happen again
cheers for the advice.
