    Help New Kindle Questions

Just bought my mum one of the new £89 kindles for her birthday

Just threw a few books on it with calibre but fuck me it's really slow navigating to anything on it and the scren flashes about 5 times and takes a good 15-20 seconds to show what is on the screen

Surely this is not normal it's my first time at using on of these so not too sure

Does calibre allow you to put books on from sources other than amazon? Missus wants one but i need to shop around.

Sorry no idea about the new Kindle, I only have the older one.
Yes calibre allows you to convert to mobi format and put them directly on the Kindle, from "other" sources.

    Thanks to koola2

I have the original Kindle and it doesn't flash five times.

Just picked one of these up yesterday not had any screen flashes - faster than the old version that I had.

As above just drag your books into calibre hit convert then transfer and they are sorted. Sold my Kindle 3 a cpl months ago am happy with the new smaller version.

Did anyone who bought one of these recently have problems registering? I bought one on Sat for the mrs, got it home and cannot register, keeps saying it can't connect, but the wifi is connected. Been on to the customer services - excellent have to say - but they had to pass it to an engineer, so we are awaiting resolution.

As for putting books on - yup no problem with that at all. I lobbed a whole heap of .mobi format books on there, picked them up instantly, really quick. Not converted any yet, but the Calibre email to Kindle sounds amazing - assuming the kindle is registered that is

if you add the collections plugin for calibre from here you don't have to do them on the kindle one at a time which really speeds up the config and it makes the lacking UI a lot more user friendly, I bought one for my nan (making the text massive has been a godsend for her) and having all the Agatha Christie books in one place and the Kitty Neale books in another has helped her, because she really couldn't get on with the single long list of books

edit- i forgot to mention I bought the same one for her and it did flash a couple of times but after a reboot (after creating the collections) it sorted it out, it did eat through the battery to begin with though but that was because it scans though the books you add to index their content

2nd edit- turns out I bought her the wifi with the keyboard version

Don't forget to show her how to make it read the book aloud, me nan loves it she was saying she had a soak in the bath and just lay there listening to it.

I don't know about the speakers, I can't remember seeing them but I'm sure there's a headphone port so the text to speech should still work via headphones but to tell you the truth m8 I've had a shocker of a week and I can't say for definite

    Thanks to casio

Make sure you have the latest firmware on it... give it a wifi connection and it should do the rest automatically.
