Question dell 1545 Hard Drive and Windows Vista

I think a laptop i have here has a dead hard drive. I booted into test function (F12 i think) and run diagnostics, all ok bar the hard drive fails to complete and shows error code '70'.

Any ideas if this is a dead hard drive, secondly is there a way i could recover the documents, photos etc??

Any help appreciated - its running or was running vista - hard drive was 250GB toshiba drive.....

    Thanks

Easiest way is to remove the HDD and connect it to a working PC as a slave and hope the data is accessible. Then just copy and paste the stuff off. You could try to create a full image of the drive to be extra safe.

If th drive fails to spin up then you might need a new board, if it spins up but clicks you might get better luck putting it in the freezer for a few hours in a sealed bag then connect it straight to your PC as a slave.

I used GetDataBack and SpinRite v6 very recently to

    a) recover files from a drive with knackered partition.
    b) check the drive afterwards that SpinRight confirmed was screwed.

Up in the usual places. Check my recent posts for my experience.

    EDIT-
SpinRight is a boot disk and will work on a MAC.

I can only comment on a Windows OS.

    Mac Version is called GetBackData...!

SpinRight is a bootable CD/USB, so yes, it reads the physical condition of the drive, not the filesystem (as far as I know).
It tries to Recover your drive from bad sectors or corrupt information.

If the drive is clicking/grinding, try to get your information back ASAP using software first.
If it fails, use SpinRight to try to recover the drive, then try to rescue the files again, but that would probably be the last ditch attempt.

Clicking drives can be a sure sign of death.

You can post to one of these Data Recovery services if you fancy re-mortgaging, a friend of mine got quoted £1,200 for a 500GB drive with no guarantees of full file recovery.
He had to go with it as it was very important business info, taught him for knocking it off the desk too.

He did get most of the files back though.

    Note to self.
    Time to Backup my shit.

    Thanks to DejaVu

You could download hirens boot cd, boot to it and select miniXP or mini Linux, then try and access the hard drive and copy the files to an external drive. Any bootable OS would do the job. If the drive is dead this will probably not work but if the system files are causing the problem or some bad sectors then this should work.
