wii softmodded but what type of USB drive?

I think I've managed to softmod my Wii but it won't recognise my usb HDD, it's just a laptop drive in an enclosure(not retail)

is there a specific brand/model I need to use?

also can I just burn an ISO file and pop it in to play now it's softmodded just to try until I get a drive that it works with?

Have you tried both USB sockets? It will only work in one of the sockets. Lay the Wii flat and make sure it's plugged into the bottom USB socket. You don't have to keep it flat, it's just to determine which is the correct socket!

Also there is a list of preferred enclosures, but I don't have it to hand. I'm sure there was a link to it in the softmod documents on here.

mine never worked with a lappy drive but was fine on my 3.5 enclosure, maybee it was because it had its own psu.

like funkyg said only works in the usb nearest the side of the case.

doesn't like either of the sockets.. I just burned a copy of Mario Olympics 2012 and it recognises the disk but when I go to play from either the loader or wii menu it says and error has occurred and to switch off..only way I can switch off is by removing the power?..must be doing something wrong..

Get a copy of WBFS manager and that can do all of the hard work for you.

I have formatted a drive to WBFS but how do i get the loader onto it?? can't access the drive normally..
don't even know if I've done it right..followed all the Modmii instructions to the letter everything went in okay and I have a homebrew and usb loader channel on the wii..
I did the letterbomb thing, how long is that ment to go on for cause when I clicked on it it was over in about a second..then went straight to modmii setup??

My drive is formatted to fat32 (so it can be read by windows too) - I use Wii Backup Manager which does everything

right, with the help of Detector I think it may be solved! I'm using a self powered 2.5" drive and I may need a 3.5" powered external drive

self powered drives work ok too, not every model though.

You dont need the drive formatted to wbfs, but I find that the easiest as most loaders check for that first. wii back up manager as mentioned above does all the work regarding the HDD and putting the ISO onto your HDD (you cant just copy the .iso to the HDD).
Once thats there, it should show up in the loader you boot on the wii, if not, you may have to change the settings in the loader to look for a wbfs drive as it may default to fat32 or NTSF.

well bloody hell! I've managed to find an old 40gig WD drive and a Sony enclosure that seems to work.. I think I'll still get a dedicated external unit for this as I'm gonna need it! lol.. played Mario at the Olympics but the covers aren't downloading from Wii Backup Manager..nevermind that's the least of my worries!
