Weight loss wonder pill that doesn't make you sick could be on sale within three years

A weight-loss pill that comes without side effects could be on the market within three years, scientists have revealed.
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has begun clinical trials on a compound which mimics the effect of a hormone that switches off appetite and the enjoyment of eating.
The compound - codename OAP-189 - is a synthetic version of a hormone called oxyntomoduin, the effect of which was discovered by researchers at Imperial College London.
Drugs already on the market which suppress appetite, including Xenical or Alli, have unpleasant side effects such as diarrhoea, wind and even incontinence.
OAP-189 could bring Pfizer the financial success it enjoyed with Viagra, which it launched in 1998.
The time between successful trials and drugs being available in shops can be last little as three years.
Scientists at Imperial College found that patients who had stomach bypass operations producer higher levels of appetite suppressing hormones, including oxyntomodulin, The Sunday Times reported.
The hormones convince the brain the body does not need food.

Stephen Bloom, professor of investigative medicine at Imperial College, told the newspaper: 'I think we could mimic the dramatic weight loss achieved with stomach bypass surgery by giving people gut-hormone derived therapies.
'If you take away hunger, food is not attractive. If you take away pleasure, people stop eating.'

More than 130 drugs have been tested as anti-obesity agents, but most have been ineffective long-term or had unacceptable side effects.
Others, Rimonabant and Reductil, have been withdrawn over safety fears after going on sale.
Tam Fry, a spokesman for the National Obesity Forum, told The Sunday Times: 'Using these hormones to try to treat the overweight has to be the way forward because they are having an effect on the brain.
'We think this approach offers the prospect of the breakthrough we need. We just have to hope it doesn't take too long to get one of them on the market.'

The research at Imperial College also found three other hormones produced in the digestive system could also be effective in weight loss.

I don't know of any pharmaceutical drug that doesn't have side effects. If you are fat, the best way to lose weight is to eat less. Over 6 million children a year die prematurely due to the lack of food and water. If that fact doesn't stop you eating your own weight in pies then you should kill yourself.

I'm pretty much the same as in the pics here, so i'm not skinny but neither am i a couch potato that pigs out on pringles and jelly babies every day watching daytime telly.

I mean no disrespect to people struggling with weight, nor do i think it is an easy thing to deal with. Will power is the most ifficult thing to manage, master and overcome, depending on the direction it is pulling you in.

The point I am making is that people that are obese probably think that they need food because of many reasons, and genuine hunger - i.e your body telling you that you 'need' food because your belly is empty - is at a guess not one of the main reasons. We all do it, open the cupboard and eat a biscuit, because we want to - not because we need to quash our hunger.

As someone who IS fat, I think you hit the nail pretty much on the head Zippey, so thank you. I think overeating is yet another mental illness in some ways. For example, I know, trust me I know, that I eat badly, that I should eat better, that I should exercise more. And for a couple of weeks in a row, maybe even a couple of months, I can keep it going, and I can lose a bit of weight. Trouble for me is it takes very little to make me stop, even the knowledge I am a heart attack waiting to happen isn't enough. I've tried some diet pills - prescribed ones - and the side effects aren't worth it. They say diarrhea, but its worse than that, with one set of tablets I was on it made the fat undigestible, so on the very odd occasion I ate something fatty, my arse would literally seep the fat out, and I couldn't control it. I've never felt so demoralised. Overeating is as bad as smoking and being an alcoholic, except in one way its worse. You don't NEED cigarettes or alcohol to live. You need food. You can't just NOT eat.

I'm sure we have had this same news about 5 times this decade already. Being fat is just one of the side effects of eating too much, at least when you trough down bacon and sausage cobs every day your waistline gives you some very obvious warning signs. If you remove a social stigmata from being a greedy fucker, the greedy fuckers will consume more and fuck their internal organs even more. Come to think of it, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Can you imagine how dangerous this sort of drug could be if used by fast food joints too?
