I did it a couple of years ago and got about 7grand back. I used the template letters on Martin Lewis website. There really is no point getting one of these companies to do it for you as it's only a case of sending of two or three letters if I remember correctly.

Took me about 18mths to get mine back through the Ombudsman. just under 3k plus £200 compo + interest
its piss easy and you have to do very little once you have submitted the forms. Just sit back and wait.
Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking
    creatures”

How long does this allow you to go back? Reason I'm asking is I took PPI years ago for stuff that's over and done with - not sure how I'm going to track policy numbers though :S

a friend of mine gave me the above letter, she got 7,000 from a mortgage, and 12,000 from a mastercard. (8,000 was pure interest!)
well worth asking for it back, all you need to do is ask, I will post here if the letter worked for me!

Is there a database that can tell you if you bought the insurance? I think I did it with an Abbey Loan once but honestly do not have the paperwork... it was many moons ago...
I think I have never taken it in anything else.

Mate, where I didn't know policy numbers I've stated 'Unknown' but as it was all through my bank, I gave the sort code and account number - they can trace historically through the details provided.

    Thanks to BFG

Cool.. Might give this a go then. I am sure I had it on a loan through Abbey National once....
How exactly does this work? If they find your claim is bogus do you get into any trouble?

Fill in the form with as much info as possible!
And no you dont get into trouble for asking... I got one back saying they could not see any evidence off PPI on one of my accounts.

Wont hurt to ask!!! So do it!

    k.

so do you have to send one off for each potential claim ? even with same company ?

i know i had one on mortgage cause they wouldn't give us the loan without it I've got mortgage details but also had it on a few credit cards and a small loan with nothing paperwork wise i can provide other than bank account number

After getting a rejection letter saying they couldn't find anything on me where I'd paid PPI, a few weeks later on 20/03/2012 I get a final offer for 9 instances, totalling £10,831.22 which has just hit my bank 13/04/2012. Thanks again to the original poster for prompting me to do this on my own rather than through a company.
