    Newbie [Hobbyist] R/C Helicopter

Hey all,Do we have any helicopter pilots amongst us? I just got the Sky King R/C as an entry level copter,

I'm after some flight sim software, does anyone know of any decent packages out there so I can practice before I ditch this into the dirt where it starts becoming expensive for replacement parts?

Don't fly but grab a cheap 808 camera from ebay and stick it to the copter for some great footage that will survive a crash or two.

    There only a few quid.

My dad uses this one to keep his hand in http://www.realflight.com/

theres only one or two on the market. But you need one that will use the the transmitter via the buddy lead to use as a control method.

Whoa, that looks cool, cheers for the heads up - but I think I'm going to plum for cheapo http://www.heliguy.com/Flight-Simula...ght-Simulator/ I reckon - if this sticks as a hobby I don't mind throwing a bit more cash at it.

either will be good as long as you leaarn with a transmitter your going to use. Find a local flying club as well. And join the http://www.bmfa.org/ for insurance help

For those gyro helicopters, you'll not need any practice mate.

I picked up a Syma S107, the smaller scaled version of this and have been buzzing it about no problem.

Two motors spin the two main blades in opposite directions - the speed generates lift. To rotate the helicopter, one motor slows down and the other speeds up allowing the gyro affect to rotate. If it turns itself slightly, there will be a trim control on the remote.

The third motor is on the tail, it lifts the rear boom up and down - which angles the main blades slightly and pulls it forwards or backwards.

I love how they call it new technology, it's actually very simple.

I had a thunder tiger raptor a few years back.. had a public domain sim that I can't remember the name of that was ok, but can't beat the real thing. Get yourself a training kit strapped on the bottom to make those landings a bit softer.

Deffo check out if there's a club local to you, most blokes there are anoraks who have flown for years but are generally very accomodating and will more than likely have a buddy box so they can get you out of ant sticky situations whilst you're learning the ropes.

Ended up selling my kit when my 1st was born to fund a pram... was a bit skint in those days

I sell helicopters online but the last one I had lasted all of about 15 minutes. I now have a Syma 107 which I love buzzing the cats with and the blades are cheap to replace. Might consider upgrading to a larger model in 2012 but I'm all about the big petrol buggies at the moment and they cost a fortune to repair lol

the s107 is a great bit of kit for a 3 channel copter. I have one myself. So easy to fly and very responsive, but for a more realistic experience, you need 4 channel.

I need to figure out which trim settings affect what, as soon as I get to what's near to being able to take off vertically the bugger tips to its side and I chip the edges of my rotors. Still to successfully take off, what can I be doing wrong?

Ideally, I'd love to get into 3D flying but if I can't get this sod off the ground without the assistance of training gear what hope have I got LOL.

RC Copters are a steep learning curve. You will struggle to lift off for months and then one day you'll crack it and be hovering and whizzing confidently. Perseverance and little steps are the key.

I used to fly 'real' helis back in the day.. 6 channel, petrol powered machines with a computer radio so you could create pitch curves, stick sensitivity etc.. it spent more time on the ground being tweaked than it did in the air. I'm all for these out of the box helis from China that just let you fly, they put the fun back into flying.
