    Wii U HDD caddy question

    Hi All

i have an old laptop sata HDD that i would like to use to store/play Wii games, using t hi s guide http://lifehacker.com/5518518/how-to...nal-hard-drive

i need a USB caddy for it but not sure which one to get tbh (theres 1000's out there) do i need to get a separate power supply, i does it get power from the USB port?

would something like this suffice? http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/203488...7Cprd:20348837 or can anyone recommend one?

the HDD i have is this http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/671/878...e/Product.html

    thanks in advance

I have that very same caddy, and although I havent tried it, its highly unlikely it will do the job.
The issue with hard drives on the wii is the power supply....
As I understand it, if the caddy has its own power supply, you're always going to be fine, but if the caddy is bus powered, it depends if the wii can deliver sufficient power to it, so you are in the realms of "it might work if you are lucky". There is a compatability list of bus powered drives that work somewhere (gbatemp i think), but if you want to play it safe, get a caddy with its own power supply.

I have a couple of them caddies but they're branded sumvision.. I couldn't get them to work.. I opted to buy a dedicated portable WD Elements drive works fine..

however I do have a sony caddy that works no problems without it's own power supply?

thanks guys, looks like i should bin the idea of using this drive, i do have another freecom drive which i know works, but its 300GB and would be a bit of a waste considering my kid only has about 8 games

would a thumb drive work? i have a 32GB one which i bought from someone on here think its a G2 data traveller

I use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002RW42JY
Works just fine powered by the wii with a WD Scorpio Blue drive in it

:edit: other drives worked fine as well btw

I got one on eBay for about £3 that works perfect with my Wii and an old MacBook HDD.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna order one of those prezzy posted and see how I get on, if it doesn't work at least I'll have another 80gb USB drive rather than letting it sit collecting dust
