Photos Can anybody help to try restore an old and damaged photo.

    Hi all

I have a small c. 5"x5", colour photo from the early 70's which has enormous sentimental value to the wife but it's in really bad condition, faded in parts, creased etc etc. I'd love to get this restored to something looking reasonably decent and was wondering if anybody here would like to have a go at it. I've tried myself but my photoshop skills just aren't good enough.

I can scan it in at any resolution if anybody can help and can put it in drop box or similar if this would help.

    thanks in advance.

If you have access to a scanner then scan it at a minimum of 300dpi, or larger if you can (max. Around 600).
Then save it as a max quality jpeg

A 600 dpi scan will let you print at up to 4x original size.

Upload it somewhere and I will see what I can do to restore it for you.

If you can't scan it I can PM you my address and you can post it to me.

cheers stimpy, currently got it as a tiff, is jpeg more preferable?

Tiff is fine but it is BIG, that is probably better for this as it is not compressed, do you have somewhere to upload it to...?

    hi all,

Just re-scanned to make sure it was at 600dpi. It's actually smaller then i though only about 3"x3".
    tiff file size = 7.8mb
    png file size = 11.1mb
    jpeg = 427kb

I'm about to upload the tiff and png to the filesonic account that rap set up in the downloads section. (hope this is ok)
edt: uploaded as mml scans. i've password protected it so please pm me for this if you can help. http://www.filesonic.com/file/GmmxQlJ

This is quite a hard one as there is quite a bit damage, I am still going to give it a go as I like messing with things like this. I know there are some really good photoshoppers on this forum and Im sure some will step up to the challenge and do a better job than I can do.

You've lost a lot of colour, looks like it has faded in the light.

The rips/scratches aren't a problem, getting the colour back is a bigger issue as it is guesswork. It's similar to a sepia image where the damage is.

I'll crack on with it later today and send you the results.

Do you want the paper edges cropping off or not? I like them as it adds a nice nostalgic value but it depends on what you want to do with the picture eventually.

    hi stimp

cheers, it's been through a lot over the last 37 years. Keep the paper edges but i'm not too fussed. The fading was quite bad.

    thanks again.
