Advice Guy wants to send something back?

I listed some ECC memory on ebay that I had tried to sell on here

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:X:RTQ:GB:1123

a guy bought it for £26+£3 postage

I have just had the following message from him.

hi mate the ram is the wrong type of ram can i return it
How would you deal with this one?

I said no returns in the listing and I just wanted shut of the ram and get a bit of cash back for it.

I would tell him it clearly says no returns on the advert, but i am willing to accept it back if you pay the insertion fees and re-stocking duty. Then see what he says. He made the mistake not you. Has he given you any feedback yet?

    Thanks to Mickey

No, he hasn't left feedback yet.

I had thought about charging him for the original postage, and all the fees of relisting etc probably only give him £18-£20 back after everything.

But I don't really want it back.

I would stick firm and say it's clearly listed as ECC mem and also you state no returns in your listing.

tell him to send it back and you will offer him a refund minus the ebay and postage fees. and just relist it m8, not worth the hassle over £20

Shit ebay and paypal are expensive. £2.60 for ebay and £1.19 for paypal, I knew they had put their prices up but that is a rip off expecially considering they charge for listing in the first place as well. That £7.19 he won't get back just for not knowing what he was buying.

It's the principle though, I've bought incorrect things before by bidding with a few mins to go and not reading the listing properly only to find I've just bought the wrong thing. I just accepted it as my mistake.

thats what id do, you have to take the risk of them returning it. they could have fucked it trying it in a motherboard thats not compatible, you never know. so i would also explain that before any refund is made you will have to test this fully and also confimr serial numbers - important, make them think you wrote them down or something

its not just the feedback, even if the seller put no returns accepted paypal will take the money from you if they make a claim, it stinks

Yeah this is the other fear that it is either not the same memory I sent him or he has knackered it trying to install it I no longer have a motherboard that it will go in to test it. It is possible one of the servers at work will take it I could test it in one of those.

The only thing I have is the photos I took I just need to find them to check the serial numbers.

I have messaged him back informing him that if I am able to test the memory in a server at work and it tests ok then I will accept it back and refund him less all fees and postage.

I certainly did, so far no reply from him.

I have checked the memory in both the spare servers at work and neither will use that memory so I am unable to test it, we had a dell poweredge 2900 in last week as well which i am pretty certain it would have gone in.

I now need to break the news to the guy he is stuck with it

you might find that offering a refund less fees will usually make them miraculously work or not bothered about it any more.

tell him that he would be better re-listing it himself as he will not lose money that way, he may even end up a few quid up.

Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean
    the same thing?
