Info Software to grab *** firmware from stream

As far as I can tell this isn't doing any dodgy (yet) just downloading what's been broadcast, might be of some use to someone. Apologies to Mods if it's too risky, although I can't see why it would be (yet)

All *** Digital set top boxes (including ***+ and ***+ HD) automatically update their firmware from certain satellite streams. This utility can download these firmware images using a DVB-S TV card. It also supports the extraction of the linux kernel and root file system from images for the following ***+ HD boxes:

    • ***DRX595
    • ***DRX895
    • ***DRX780
    • ***HD***

Replace *** in url with a common satellite provider
Download my latest breaks and electro mixes or listen to Sellout Breaks FM

How would you get the firmware back onto the box though? I guess a JTAG solution would come out. To be honest though with the price of linux boxes it's probably not worth messing around with it.

Now that would be slick. I'm guessing the CPU in a *** box is going to be a lot faster than my DM800 clone

Do they not use a similar broadcom SoC?

Not sure tbh but my Sky HD box is fast and my DM800 isn't anywhere near as quick.

The set top boxes monitor streams on the satellite for software updates (and flashes the update images to the onboard flash chip when there is a new one), my tool just downloads these images using a PC so they can be examined. It also supports extracting some of the parts of the update for some boxes (the images for the recent boxes contain a linux kernel and a file system with various applications and configuration files). It is only really useful for finding out a bit more about how the boxes work, and for monitoring the software updates available at the moment, as there is no easy way to flash the images to the box (it would involve JTAG, but I have no idea how you would enable a JTAG connection on any of the boxes).

I have not seen any images for the drx890 on either update stream yet so I am guessing it probably flashes the drx895 images as the two boxes are basically the same, but with different hard drive sizes.

the jtag points for these boxes have been posted. well the thompson one has, The amstrad one is a little moe complicated.
the Linux firmware is still a way off being finnished.
we have the thompson running on linux and its in the process of being ported now to enigma.
were not coders so it taking a lot longer than we thought.

    satzz we need linux coders.

I vote ban him anyway, he's only here for one thing and that's free sky, once he's worked out he can't get free sky he won't come back.
