Newcastle will play in the Europa League at the bare minimum next season, after securing a top six finish in the Premier League.
Despite an incredible 4-4 draw against Manchester United at Trafford, Everton cannot catch the high-flying magpies, and Newcastle will play in Europe next season. The gap between Everton in 7th and NUFC in 4th is 14 points with 12 left to play for.
It is a return to the European scene for the first time since the 2006-07 season when Glenn Roeder led the side to qualification for the UEFA Cup through the Intertoto Cup route, and a 7th placed finish. Alan Pardew’s men broke into the top four yesterday after a stunning 3-0 win at home against Stoke. A brace from Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cisse’s 11th goal of the season saw the Toon leapfrog Spurs into 4th.
Liverpool’s win over Everton in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final meant that a 6th placed finish in the Premier League means European football. This is because the two FA Cup finalists have pretty much qualified for Europe. Liverpool qualified with their Carling Cup glory earlier this season. Chelsea also look likely to qualify with a top six finish.
Today’s draw for Everton guarantees a top six finish for Newcastle but it seems like the Tyneside outfit have Champions League qualification on their minds. The Toon Army will be travelling to Wigan, Chelsea and Everton in the last four games, and will also be cheering on their boys against Manchester City at St James’ Park.
