Surely you can't expect a player to be sublime in every single match he plays? If thats your definition of "the best" then there simply isn't a best footballer in the world at the moment. Which is kind of an oxymoron isn't it, as someone must be the best? Every player has an off day, I didn't really see any Maradona club football but I'm pretty sure even he had average and bad games, Pele surely can't be the best as he only ever played in the Brazilian league which was shit.

no argument on the last point. Is any footballer a god in his own time though? To me, Messi is as good as I've ever seen, I've seen far more of him than I ever did of Maradona - being limited to the World Cups, the very odd European club match, and of course the highlight reels. When I've seen Messi play I've usually been impressed, and scoring 65 or however many goals it is this season that he's scored is just phenomenal, no matter what league you are in, or indeed how skilled the players around you are. 65 goals, 28 assists. Fuck me. Sorry, but for me thats pure genius level, if you can ever apply that term to a footballer!
