Tech OpenElec/XBMC running on Raspberry Pi

    Hi,

I've been following the goings on on various R-Pi forums and kept seeing mentioned development of Openelec/XBMC for the R-Pi

Thought I'd grab a build and try it out.

    Here are my results..

720p video streaming flawlessly from a network share, the GUI is like treacle but the playback is as close to perfect as makes no difference.

    Instructions here... http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?ti...r_Raspberry_PI

    discuss...

    cheers,

    malty

Do you think it is a hardware limitation or would a faster SD card improve the GUI? Have you tried 1080p? Still not been offered my pre-order and I have been looking forward to this since the day I first saw an article about it and posted on here.

I think the GUI is purely a horsepower/ram issue and will improve with optimisations. During the GUI the cpu was at around 90%. During video playback, it was more like 30% !

I played a 1080p file and it ran fine with no jitters although my lan couldn't quite keep up so it would rebuffer every now and then. CPU and Vcore usage was still low enough though.

    Looking good Malty.
Cannot wait for mine to arrive.
Shame MythTV won't work under ARM, but maybe the MythTV plugin for XBMC will?
I will have to wait and see!

We were playing at work with this yesterday and the GUI is slow and almost maxes out the CPU, as soon as you start playing video and the gui turns off CPU utilisation drops right down.
In the vid you are using a mouse which was very treacle like, we used the android xbmc remote and that works flawlessly and dosnt use the gui on the pi.
We also found you can see the pi from other computers in the house so maybe can be used to create a cheap NAS for media with SAB NZB running on it, more playing needed on that.
I'm going to be using one with xbmc for my multiroom audio system and use the android phones to browse and play the music anywhere in the house.

We tried the Dark Knight x264 1080p and it ran it flawless even the Imax opening scenes

just noticed lirc was running on openelec so I connected the infrared receiver from my revo and rebooted and it works out of the box with my generic remote AND is much more fluid in the gui. very impressive.

There is smbd running too so would be easy to set up a network share I think. Python is also included so sabnzbd should also be ok, although at some point you're going to run out of ram.

I imagine it will as unraring files will be slower than on a normal pc... i had that problem when i installed sabnzbd directly on an apple tv...using a plugin for xbmc that enabled streaming films/tv progs as they downloaded using sabnzbd, it would buffer every few seconds when trying to watch HD sources...although SD ones did play ok.

don't know why I didn't check before but openelec was already running a share, with the machine name OPENELEC.

anyway, if you're hoping it'll be able to do 'real' computer functions like handling large files/ unrarring then I think you'll be disappointed. It can play HD videos because it has the hardware to decode them without taking up too many system resources. That was part of the design, however it's still a very low powered (arm) pc with very low ram. In comparison my phone has double the cpu's, double the clock speed, four times the ram and still struggles when manipulating large files. My phone didn't cost £25 though...

The plugin i mentioned for xbmc allows control of sabnzbd running on another PC on a network, but requires that xbmc can mount the folder used by sabnzbd on the remote PC. This allows the PC to do all the processing work and the machine running xbmc to just stream the film/tv prog.

Problem i have is that the apple tv running xbmc doesn't mount the folder of sabnzbd on my mac so doesn't work. i'm assuming that the pi running xbmc would allow this. Streaming films/tv progs directly from newsgroups is all that i'm missing from xbmc.

Have you tried any apps to control xbmc? ie xbmc commander..

oh i see, xbmc can mount folders on other pc's, I manually mounted a share on my revo so I could transfer some stuff across and it seemed to be fine.

as for commander, any of the ip driven remotes should be fine but no I haven't tried it yet. I've had to put it all away for today as I'm working tonight and need some sleep, but I'll certainly try over the weekend. Someone above has already said they have used one on android so it must work.

For those interested, Raspbmc (the from the ground up xbmc build) just went into beta.

    Details here ... http://www.raspbmc.com/2012/05/raspbmc-is-now-in-beta/

Haven't tried it yet, hoping to today.
