Help Re: Apple TV 2nd Gen - What would you recommend to install for the best set up?

    Hi,

I think I have got my hands on a 2nd gen Apple TV if it turns up as promised (IOS 5.0.1). I would like to be pre-armed with as much relevant info as possible, hence my post.

Could any of you link me to a recommended JB walkthrough or suggest which one I should be researching.

I would really like to install XMBC and as many useful plug ins as I can from the get go (this is primarily to be used as a TV Gadget for my missus). Is there an "easy" way of doing this?

Also, what are the plug ins that I should be looking to install with a view to get as much "TV" on there as possible? I have heard of Icefilms (but currently have no idea how to add this on having not used XMBC since the original Xbox), but I am not sure what others are called to use for Sports and TV Series etc that I should be looking for. Also is there something for Netflix?

I will be a complete ATV Noob, so ANY information will be very much appreciated to help me get this up and running (I know there will be a wealth of info on here and Google, but knowing what to search for in the first place would be very helpful - it's all new to me).

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

    Morning

Ok there are a few parts to JBing the ATV2 and installing XBMC and "Add Ons"

First thing you want to do, is get all the parts you need to do all this

    1. Ensure you have a working Micro USB Data Cable
    2. For the JB its self Download Seas0nPass - .
    3 Ensure you have a working ATV2

    The JB is pretty easy.

    1. With the ATV Disconnected2. Run Seas0n Pass on the PC as "admin" and also ensure your running under XP SP3 (right click go to properties and compatibility)
    2. Click Create IPSW
    3. SP will download the new IPSW and "JB it" it will then decode it and all this automated stuff.
    4. It will then prompt you to connect the ATV and put it in "DFU" mode
    5. Connecting it, is only via the Micro USB cable. Once you do this, the while light on the front should flash rapidly
    6. Following the on screen prompt, hold Menu and Play down on the remote for 7 seconds.
    7. SP will then register in DFU mode and begin to install the new IPSW.
    8. SP will auto load iTunes, and auto start a restore of the new custom IPSW and then iTunes will restore the ATV2 and it will say complete.
Congratulations, your ATV2 is now jailbroken. (this is evident by connecting to the TV and the "Settings" box should now be replaced with a FireCore red logo.

Few pointers from what I ran into.

    * If your ATV2 does not start flashing when you connect via USB, connect the power and then enter DFU mode. Once SP has it registered and starts to install, disconnect the power.

    * When connecting via USB, ensure all USB HUBS and dongles etc are disconnected.
    * Ensure your USB cable is working (you can check this if you're having problems by doing a Restore via Itunes (to default IPSW) if this works, so does your cable.
Now, you have a JB ATV2, you wanna get XBMC and get the adds on right?

So, you'll need a few things, first thing you'll need it an app called "WinSCP" this is a SSH client which connects from the PC to the ATV in order to install XBMC/Nito TV clients, and also to pass the add ons over to the ATV2s Root system.

I once did a JB when Nito TV came installed, and I could access the ATV and install XBMC from the menu, but this isn't an option.

1 So you need to connect via WinScp to install Nito TV first.
2 To do this, go into the ATV on the TV and Settings - General - About and make note of the IP address.
3 With the ATV2 on, go to WinSCP and enter the IP in the HOST Name.
    4. Username is "root" and password is "alpine"
    5. Hit OK/Enter.
    6. WinSCP will then search for the device on your network, and you may have to press Yes to any Pop Ups etc
    7. You should then be able to see a screen which shows your PC on one side, and the ATV2 on the other side.
    8. Once you're in the ATV you need to run a CMD, click the command box on Winscp at the top toolbar (it's in black)
    9. A pop up box will show, then enter the details as shown on THIS link.
You now have Nito TV on your ATV2. You ATV2 will have to be rebooted, and you'll now find Nito TV on your main menu within ATV. You can load this app up and you'll be able to install XBMC from the list along with some other cool add on stuff.Once you have XBMC installed, you then need to add on some respositorys.

A list of some to start with are HERE & HERE starters I by far recommend 1Channel as this as films & tv series!!

These are ZIPs and keep them on the Laptop in a folder on your Desktop.

Let me know when you're this far and then I'll talk you through SSH the ZIps into ATv2 Mobile folder and then installing them via XBMC.

    Hi BigBrand,

MEGA THANKS for the above post, that was exactly what I was after. I will have a good read up on everything you have listed.

(it sounds alot like when setting up my DM800, I hope it's as straightforward - as that was all alien to me also but managed it)

THANKS again, it really is appreciated.

No problems buddy, it's fresh to me as I did it myself yesterday on an ATV2 which had some problems.Currently running 10+ Add Ons on XBMC etc all working great. (streaming Laptop iTunes to ATV as I type)I had never even heard of SSH before I attempted to JB, but it's pretty easy to be fair.

    Hi,

I have used SSH from iPad to Dreambox, I'm anything but "au fiat" with it. Parrot fashion I can do just about. So I will more than likely be pestering for more info as and when the ATV turns up.

1Channel is currently the best add on in XBMC for tv and movies at the moment it used to be icefilm but to be honest that has gone right downhill since megaupoad went pop. you can also add rtmpgui to xbmc which give u live tv from all over the world although this can be hit and miss with some channels. theres also the Navi X addon which again adds tv movies and live tv streams.

Outside of XBMC on the ATV2 the only other thing I use is Netflix with my DNS changed to the american settings and to be honest Ive been using this more than I use XBMC (im ashamed of this as netflix is totally legal!) the UK netflix is pretty pooor content wise but the if you change the dns setting on the atv2 to a usa dns (which can be found for free if you hunt around or u can pay a service like unblock us to provide you with one) the usa service is really good and has films and tv shows on that havent even been shown by Sky yet (some of the newer titles on there are Killer elite, Drive, transformers dark side of the moon etc etc) well worth £5.99 a month in my opinion

    3 Thanks given to MoNkFiSh

    Hi,

Everything has been fine. But today I cannot get Navi-X to bring up the channels interface.

Is NaviX working for you at present? (it is not working on ATV or PC for me).

Log out of your uk account on the ATV...enter a US DNS in the ATV settings...reboot....then log back into Netflix using the UK account details.

Signed up for the trail to give netflix a go.
Looking at using unblockUS to get to the US content.

Or do you just use one of the free up and down methods. I want something stable that the wife and kids can use not something that requires me to update stuff all the time.

    Thanks.
