Tech Youview TV platform and set-top box coming to UK stores this month (update: priced at

The BBC's iplayer has become too successful. It either needs to calm down or be put on a more level playing field with on demand services from the other big UK broadcasters -- and it's going to be the latter. Youview -- which has nothing whatsoever in common with YouTube except its name and the fact that it also does video -- is a PVR set-top box that uses both an aerial and a web connection to allow catch-up viewing, and we've just heard it'll arrive in UK stores towards the end of this month. It'll bring together programs from the BBC (which also contributed £10 million of license fee cash), ITV, Channel 4, Five, and Sky, using infrastructure from BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, and it'll target millions of British viewers who want a "seamless" mix of live and archived telly without being tied to a subscription -- and who don't yet depend on a Smart TV, games console or other converged device.

Update: Youview front man Lord Alan Sugar told us that the box is Humax-built and will cost £299. He also added that there'll be adverts within commercial programs, but not plastered over the EPG or interface itself.

I love that Alan Sugar hasn't built it, know your limitations!

I just checked the channel lineup and am struggling to see (apart from internet service, currently BBC iPlayer 4OD and Demand 5) it's no better at all than terrestrial. Add a laptop/tablet to digital terrestrial and you're way in front!

    Had one since last Wednesday.

Its slow and buggy and has annoying habit of getting stuck on the EPG.

Once its in EPG there is no quick one click way to get you back to the TV.

The Iplayers have the same limitation in so far as only certain programs are cached.

Defiantly not worth the £299 price tag.

    2 Thanks given to JonEp

Isn't this just freeview with a few on demand services? You can already get set top boxes with iPlayer and on demand stuff as well so what makes this different? I was hoping it would be a full IPTV solution like the old Tiscali TV. That would be perfect for the bedroom where I don't have an aerial.

this box is so 2000 and late.....seriously though there are a hundred devices outthere capable of all that including most smart TV's that can be had for just a little more than that box

Well that settles that then. Not that I'd buy one!
I'd rather spend £299 on another Revo.

Does it have Sky Go on it?

Tesco used to sell these that had it: http://www.fetchtv.co.uk/20gbp-off
Never found anything else yet that does however

It's a PVR too. Its should have been released years ago.

Your right, many of the smart TV and Tivo boxes do the same thing now for less money.

Its at the wrong price tag. I think these will just end up being bundled free with TV packages just like ADSL modems and Routers.

Before I bin it or rip the 500gb HD out (that's if they don't want it back) I want to find some time to have a look at the network traffic on its talk home.

I suspect its sending back as much data as its pulling down looking at the link light on my router when its on free view.

Hmm, sounds just like the Humax Foxsat and freeview PVRs which top all of the reviews but worse... The Humax PVRs have ethernet for OD streaming services. Looks like it might be another Amstrad video phone

Yeah I read that Humax were manufacturing them, seems pointless as alternatives are already on the market with a cleaner UI (going from what you said about this one) for the same price and are top of all reviews. Can't see what this adds to the market which isn't there already (and has been there for a long time!).

What a heap of shit, £300 ffs. If you've got the required internet connection then you're going to have a computer already that can do all the streaming anyway.

£10m of licence fee went to that twat Alan Sugar for this crap, what asshole did that?
