Square Enix's long-in-development companion piece Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been cancelled, according to a Kotaku source, but don't throw your laundry out the window just yet - materials from the game may have been transferred over to Final Fantasy XV. The publisher has apparently "decided to let Final Fantasy Versus XIII die quietly on the vine and fade away, instead of officially announcing its cancellation. This would likely be due to the fact a public acknowledgement of a Versus' cancellation could impact things like Square Enix's stock prices." Another source insists the game's "development and resources" have been "folded into" the next numbered Final Fantasy, though what exactly this amounts to is unclear.
Kotaku got in touch with Square Enix for comment on whether the game was still in production. The response: "we have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available."
It's Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary soon - there's a three-day celebration at the start of September. Andriasang reports that we can expect Final Fantasy XIII announcements, perhaps including the reveal of another direct sequel, Final Fantasy XIII-3.
