Has anyone got experience of the DJI Phantom? I'm really tempted, but it's not cheap for a toy - around £350.

its a great bit of kit, used a mates, really stable & fun. if you get one make sure you get it from a legit uk company, loads on ebay but most are fake/clones & use cheap parts..
my T380 didnt last long as i trashed it a few times(cheap to repair), thankfully it was only cheap, moved upto the 450 series & had some great fun with it over the summer but trashed that after a prop fail & landed in a lake, still there lol.
will get a new one after christmas wallet permitting.

i follow this guy on youtube, he builds high end quad kits

I got a DJI phantom yesterday, it's a brilliant bit of kit. I just came back from 2 weeks in the US and bought a cheap heli-tech 1si with onboard video for trying out over there and caught the quadcopter bug. Came home and ordered the phantom straight away. It took some time to get setup tbh, the manual is absolutely useless, and following the instruction sheet in the box for updating software left my quad non-working so had to spend hours googling around. The manual doesn't even tell you how to start the engines (it's a weird combo of stick movements to corners).

But finally got it working and flew it this morning for the first time with my gopro 3+ attached. The mount for gopro that the quad comes with doesn't fit the 3+ very well but it looks to me like I can just use the waterproof housing the 3+ came with so I'll'll try that later.

Here's my first first flight with it this morning then it started raining so i stopped, I'll do a proper flight later on with it. But I'm super impressed with how stable the quad is.

After watching that last video the phantom has just gone on my xmas list. Looks like it has a great range too.

It's so much fun mate, it should be on everybody's Christmas list. Not sure what max range is, atm I have it set to go no further than 2000feet, but you can change that in the software, still got the prop guards on atm which add weight too, so give it another week of flight practice and i'll take those off

I'm confused, does this have a video transmitter? Or are you flying it blind from the ground and just view the video when you get it back home?

You can buy video transmitters for them easily enough, there's quite a few people who do that. I just have a gopro attached and fly blind at the moment. Going to order a gimbal soon to get some better quality video.

Its actually the phantom 2 vision I've asked for, you get a live video feed with that so you can fly and view video live with your mobile clipped onto the controller.

I've not taken it out in a gale but in gps mode it adjust itself to always stay stationary, so should counter the direction that the wind is pushing it.

FOLLOW: 60 Minutes, Video, Amazon Delivery, Jeff Bezos, Amazon, Amazon Delivery Drone, Amazon Delivery Drones, Amazon Drones, Amazon, Amazon Prime Air, Amazon Warehouse, Charlie Rose, Delivery, Delivery Drones, Prime Air, Technology News

Amazon offering delivery on Sunday was only the beginning.

In an interview with Charlie Rose on Sunday's episode of "60 Minutes," Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos revealed the giant online store is developing a drone-based delivery service called Prime Air. According to Bezos, Prime Air would be able to get customers their products only a half-hour after they click the "buy" button. His "optimistic" estimate to "60 Minutes" was that Prime Air will be available to customers within 4 to 5 years.

Prime Air was unveiled to Rose and "60 Minutes" as a surprise, the secret project being part of Amazon's busy R&D department. The drones will be capable of delivering items up to 5 pounds in weight, which Bezos said account for 86 percent of the items that Amazon delivers. Individual items will be flown from one of the company's 96 mind-bogglingly massive warehouses, also known as "fulfillment centers."

Last minute shoppers or those with itchy mouse trigger fingers -- especially with Cyber Monday tomorrow -- may want to curb their enthusiasm for Prime Air. Amazon is still working on more safety testing and FAA approvals before the Prime Air fleet will be able take flight.

“The hard part here is putting in all the redundancy,” Bezos said. “All the reliability to say this can’t land on somebody’s head.”

Check out Amazon's video introduction of Prime Air above. You can also watch the full "60 Minutes" segment below. The Prime Air reveal begins at 11:05.
