microsoft Have A Look At Windows 8

Earlier on in the week, the Verge managed to get their hands on some graphics of the new Windows 8 Packaging. Microsoft have officially signed off on the RTM version of Windows 8, and of course there’s been many a leaked copy on the web since then, but if you’re waiting till October 26th to get your hands on a hard physical copy of Microsoft’s latest OS, then this is the packaging to keep your eye out for on shelves.

The boxes themselves are quite stylish, and very reflective of the*Metro*(Microsoft say’s we can’t call it that anymore) Windows 8 UI. The front cover features a colourful flavour of the Windows 8 Logo and the only difference between the two boxes is the darker colour scheme for the Pro edition.

Unlike before, Microsoft will only be offering two flavours of Windows 8 to consumers. Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. Windows RT will only be distributed to OEM’s and of course their enterprise solutions will be dealt with*separately.

Microsoft will be looking to push online digital downloads as their main form of retail sales with Windows 8. It will cost only a mere $39.99 for users looking to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from previous versions of Windows if they purchase a digital copy. However if you want a hard physical copy, it will set you back $69.99. Either way, Windows 8 will be significantly cheaper than previous versions of Windows.

Just grabbed the retail Pro version from MSDN and installed onto a VM. Will have a proper play tomorrow morning.

Finally they have put an O/S at a decent price. If it does come out at that price I'm going to be buying a legit copy of 8.

I am still confused as to what version will do a fresh install and not just an upgrade from a previous windows installation....

Why does "fat chance" and "slim chance" mean
    the same thing?

If I grab the version from MSDN will it be the final version and the serial won't expire? I can't decide if I should rebuild my Revo or not. Has anyone tried XBMC and Sab on it yet?

It is the final version available to developers with all valid keys.

Both x86 and x64 are on there in both Win 8 and Win 8 Pro flavours. VLK licensing is available as well through the VLSC.

I installed Windows 8 last night on my laptop. The install was painless and was up and running within 30 min's. I had to get the graphics drivers when I did a Windows update and that was it. I used my new Outlook.com address as my account which set up a random XBOX live account for the US region which is a bit annoying so anything that uses a live account doesn't work properly as it wants me to change the region to US.

First thought was how the hell do I restart? Had to log out and then hit the shut down button. And how do you close down Metro apps without using the task manager.

Really liking the new task manager, lots of information on it. Kinda like the tiles as i'm used to using a Windows mobile but something just doesn't feel right. I can't imagine my dad being able to use it if he bought a new PC that came with it.

Hows everyone else getting on? I'll not put it on my Revo for now until i've used it for a few more weeks.

livesy if you go to the top right corner of the screen it will bring out the charms bar, click settings then power for restart, shutdown etc.

Well, after a few days on my laptop, I'm sort of getting used to it.....but I still don't like it. It most certainly won't be moving onto my main machine.

I have had a problem installing apps from the store...they install ok, but when I start them, the screen goes all flickery. All the preinstalled apps work fine, just new ones....not sure whats causing that...but of the 3 or 4 I tried, they all did it.
