Those who were hoping to jailbreak their Apple TV 3 were left quite disappointed but it should be mentioned that there is light at the end of the tunnel. According to 9to5Mac, who claims to have learned some inside knowledge through someone close to the project, there is in fact a jailbreak for the third-generation Apple TV in the works. There seems to be a handful of people still working on a jailbreak for the device and while it isn’t complete, there is at least one method to jailbreaking which is currently being worked on in hopes of successful results. James Abeler of the FireCore team confirmed the news by stating the following:
There is a group of very bright and talented individuals working on a lead that could result in a usable jailbreak for the 3rd gen Apple TV. While there is no telling how long this process could take, we remain optimistic that a jailbreak for this device will be available in the future. For the record, no one at FireCore is involved in the jailbreak discovery process.
Furthermore, Abeler mentioned that FireCore (the company behind Seas0nPass, aTV Flash, and MiRow) is ready to release updates for its software when the new jailbreak becomes available. Many users who previously used stock firmware moved to jailbreak their Apple TVs because of the new and interesting functionality that is available to hacked devices and the trend will only seem to continue at this rate. As for the Apple TV 3, until the jailbreak is released, the price of the Apple TV 2 will likely remain higher. It is pretty crazy how consumers are willing to pay almost three times the price of the older model of the Apple TV for premium features but at the end it doesn’t come as much of a surprise. There wasn’t any mention of a time frame but at least we know the jailbreak is in fact being worked on.
