They fought to keep it under wraps but Twitter just wouldn't keep its mouth shut - the next Metal Gear Solid title is Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, and - brace for impact - it's an open world game.
Ground Zeroes was shown off to audiences at the 25th Metal Gear Solid Anniversary event in Tokyo this morning.
The game runs on the studio's proprietary FOX Engine, which is optimised for multiplatform development, and is targeting Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
In a demonstration video, said to be "running on a PC at current-gen specs", an unknown character was shown infiltrating a camp at night time, dispatching guards, avoiding searchlights and (finally) making off in a jeep.
Cut-scenes were in-engine, and reportedly "amazing". Thanks to VG247 for keeping its ear to the ground.
Eurogamer reports that the game's protagonist is war veteran Big Boss, father to the original Solid Snake, which could point to a 1970s timeframe.
We've got some images of the man, care of Andriasang, looking very much in the pink.
What do you reckon?
