There is no such thing as an "Average course" in you sense of the word. They are all based on the same "hole distance" rating. i.e. Even your local "72 par golf course" should take a golf pro 72 shots to complete.

In all cases, an average golfer will not get anywhere near 72 on any course

Just to back this up, look at this professional leader board... It shows 9 players under par, several on Par and about 40 over Par.... and that's the pro's on an "average game"

    @MsDG,
You're reading too much into it and thinking of it per golfer and it's partly my fault I guess with "they will all average 72 shots each".

No 1 average golfer playing a 72 Par course is ever going to hit Par for the whole 18 holes, I completely agree (enter their handicap here).
But we are talking averages (more than 1 golfer) over the whole day. I mean if one golfer hits Par on one hole, another golfer on another and so on.

    @ DejaVu
And you are still arguing when you obviously don'y understand the golf scoring system!

As I mentioned above... The Golf Handicap system is based on BEST possible score, not average (try googling it). Meaning, if a player has a handicap of (say 18)... that means on a 72 PAR course, when he is having his BEST day he can get a score of 90. His AVERAGE will be higher than 90.

"A player's handicap is intended to show a player's potential, not his average score, as is the common belief."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handicap_%28golf%29

If you still want to argue the point then simply google and find me a golf leaderboard (there are lots online to find) where in just one game the average Par of all the players was 72?

Going back to the orginal question, I think the question was trying to be clever. i.e.... hard maths (working it out properly) Versus simple maths (which is based on the incorrect assumption that golf course par is based on Averages).

However, the whole Par system IS NOT based on AVERAGES, its based on Best possible score. On a average day, most of the average Golfers will be over Par even if you include the handicap scores. In fact, the whole point of golf is to try and get to your personal Nivarna of "Par"... Getting under Par is the kind of thing you bang on at the pub for months!

I feel you give the question too much credit.

Are you kidding me?! That is exactly what I was trying to say.
You're trying to spark an argument when we both agree (sounds like a woman to me!).

As for the PAR being below 72 for an entire course, http://www.pgatour.com/r/leaderboard/.
Looks to me like they are averaging 68 or below. Just saying.

I give up with this, I find it aggravating when women cannot be proven wrong.

    Peace X

The maths question doesnt give the ability to return any sort of equation due to the intergers being unobtainable.
