Default Your help needed with maths question

    Hi,

Please help in resolving a maths argument I'm having with my lad on the accuracy of 'hard maths' against 'easy maths'. As an example, I've chosen "how many shots are taken on total on an average summer Saturday on an average 72 par golf course.

What are your estimates/guesses. A pint rests on the answer.

Calc-hours golf played x number of golfers x average score

    Thanks

Most people that play Golf can't break 100 so I'll go for 108.

No maths involved but doesn't it have to be 72 ?

Aren't Pars set up by averages ?

I give up you have now edited and changed the question.

    Q. On average how many edits does it take to pose a question that has enough detail in it so people can answer it.

No, Pars are setup by the distance from each tee to hole.

To be honest the original question is total bollocks and is impossible to answer as the ability of the golf players it not defined. If you assumed that the Saturday consisted of just pro / semi pro players (who were of all good ability) then you could argue that the average score should be around 72. However, with amateurs thrown into the mix it could be anything.

The question is a kin to "guess how many sweets are in the jar"

And how many shots (on average) it takes to get to the green and pot the ball.

It's a trick question and the answer is already in it.

Average day on an average Par course. It's nothing to do with how many golfers. There could be 10 golfers or 50 golfers, they will all average 72 shots each.

Some less, some more - but an average 72 par course is an average 72 par course.

The answer is 72 (on average!)

    Thanks to DejaVu

I am sorry, that is total bollocks.

Very few people can get close to par on a golf course unless you are very good. On a average golf course on a average day you will get very few people who can get anywhere near par... and virtually none under par.

Even you bring the handicap system into play, this is supposed to indicate a players best potential, not his average score

Average on any course is not par. Golf courses are not means tested and then determined what Par it will be. There is no Par 72 golf course on this Planet where the average score is anywhere near 72, unless it's played for maybe one day only by a bunch of Pro's.

Unless they are average golfers, playing an average course with an average par of 72.

A par is calculated by a pre-determined score that a scratch golfer (handicap of 0) should require to complete a hole.
Hence why all golfers have a handicap if they are pro's or beginners.

In truth, there is no correct answer to the question - the offer of beer determines that.
It will only ever be an average (guestimation)

I went on the average handicap being 18 meaning a total of 90 but as it was hard to even work out what the question was all I could do was guess and it isn't much clearer after the edit.
