Safe to stop CHKDSK correcting MFT process?

Hi All

have a question im hoping someone can answer pretty quickly please

i have been trying to fix a corrupt disk, and kicked off a chkdsk /f at about 3pm today, it completed the first part quite quickly (after lots of "Recovering orphaned files") but it has now been stuck on Usn Journal verification completed.
Correcting errors in the Master File Table (MFT) mirror. for about 5 hours now!! i need to shut down the pc that its running on as its in my bedroom, and noisy enough to keep us awake......is it safe to stop the current process, just by closing the cmd window, or any other way?

any quick replies will be much appreciated, thanks

was going to add, i cant see / tell if its actually doing anything tbh, not sure if i can check either :S

Personally, I wouldn't mate, but going by the length of time it's been doing things, the HDD is sounding to me like it's mechanically on the fail anyway.

thanks burner, i did manage to get 1 large file off earlier using testdisk, but theres many many more i need to get off it which is painstaking doing it one by one so was trying to repair it.....so i could atleast connect to it through explorer, just to get the data off it

anyway here goes, i'll plug it in downstairs and see if i can kick the process off again, leave it overnight then

Worth a shot mate, I recall running getdataback some time ago and took all of three days to get what it could off a 250gig HDD which was really pleasing for the owner.
