    Bad News Jessops in Administration

    source: Sky News

Professional services firm PwC confirms its appointment as administrator for troubled high street photography retailer Jessops.
Sky sources earlier revealed that an application for administration was filed on Wednesday morning at the High Court.
Administrations puts around 2,000 jobs at risk.
The demise of the decades-old chain would be the first high street casualty of 2013, and comes soon after consumer electricals chain Comet hit the wall, sparking more than 6,000 job losses.
Retail Week said administrators from PricewaterhouseCoopers were expected to be appointed after the firm suffered ongoing funding problems.
Jessops has struggled amid the digital photo revolution and the retail shift to online trading and camera phones.

Jessops will not honour gift vouchers or accept returned goods, it is confirmed.

Hope they can save as many shops as possible as a valued member on here works for them.

More doom and gloom for the New Year.

    Thanks to cybollox

I can't believe that these closing stores won't accept store vouchers. You have already paid them the money, so it is basically theft.

gift vouchers will make you a creditor but you wont be very high on the list.

link from MSE about the JJB demise but the advise will be the same.

I'm surprised they've lasted this long as I've never seen anyone actually in a shop buying something for years .

I rang them at xmas to see if they could price match a Canon 600d but they said they dont price match websites because they are dodgy. I explained that it was Amazon and they just refused. Took my business elsewhere. Shame but if your not competitive then game over.

Shame to see them go. Another example of why would anybody buy gift vouchers these days though?

Ta buddy - it's we better staff that suffer most, even Jessops has good people!

There's a lot I don't know about - but I'm well up on a lot of things in photography (I know there are some who are not - every company has them somewhere!) and I don't think I've ever let anyone down.

It's a sad reflection on the austere climate we are in - somewhere, somebody bites a bullet.

I wish I was that good m8, but I'm not best when it comes to subjects bigger than a fifty pence piece - including people!

Aside from that, setting up as a successful professional is a costly business to begin with, and I certainly don't have those kinds of funds...

Cheers m8 for the kind words though.

Best of luck Bilbo, hope something comes along. My budget only really stretched to the occasional filter etc. from my local store but I can't fault the knowledge and enthusiasm of the staff there.

Shame for those employed by the company, The non competitive claims are not really valid, I got one of my 1D's from Jessops last new years eve as they were the best value place to buy in the uk including online cameras and lenses they are pretty competitive against the uk prices the imports no one can compete but I can't believe that many people buy imports? Comparing online shops against bricks and mortar is also not fair, just go have a look at the shelves in a Jessops the kit on display are not dummy's what do you think the value of all that is? now put the same amount in to their 198 stores thats a lot of money to have up front for people to come in and play with then go buy online (yes we all do it) Never mind the stock room.

The small stuff like memory cards I think are where Jessops made their money (either that or their buyers were crap) their prices were way over the top and are the up sell items do you want a memory card and case for your new camera what about a tripod batteries etc no one knowing would ever buy them if they had done any research in advanced but the ones who bought without much knowledge would walk out with the whole lot?

their 3 lenspen deal is pretty good at the moment for £3

never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!

They should have shut all their shops the day they realised they were uncompetitive and used the huge amounts of credit available to them and their relationships with brands and distributors to undercut everyone else online.

They price matched a video camera for me a few years ago which saved me over £200. Curry's price was £850. Jessops normal price was £820. The manager in Jessops told me he could go down to £700 but would have to call head office to match the £610 photo magazine price I presented him with. One phone call later I get my camera for £610 plus a free pack of three tapes. Also the benefit of dealing with a local store if it ever goes wrong within the warranty period.

Be sorry to see them go. Bought my Canon 450D there. Wouldn't buy an expensive camera on the internet without getting my hands on it to see if it feels right for me. (">
