so that's 250,000,000,000 bytes leaving about 238 GB's, now take away the 12-15% that system restore is using up and also take away the amount of installed memory that is being used by hibernation, bet your a bit closer to the figure now m8..

Have a look at your page file size. You can check it under system preferences / performance/ advanced

Delete some of that midget porn you've stashed from the other half and you'll find it.

Your best option is CCLeaner to find out what Temp stuff is hogging the system.

Failing that, you might have problems with drive reporting the wrong totals.
Right Click the drive, goto Tools > Error Checking and click 'Check'.

The very best and highly recommended option is to back everything up you need and reinstall Windows. OEM systems are easy enough.
Always sorts shit like this, but only do this if your confident everything important has been kept.

Treesize is the first thing I'd try. I use it all the time to free space up on servers at work.

It should show you in the root directory on C:. It's a hidden file called pagefile.sys. It's supposed to be around the same size as your RAM but I have set mine to 1gb for the initial size and 2gb maximum and had no issues.

EDIT: System Properties/Advanced/Performance Options/Advanced/Virtual Memory is where you will find it. It actually tells you the size of your current page file there.

If you have 4 gig or more simply remove pagefile as you dont really need it. Hibernate also can be removed. These are not really used unless you are doing lots of intensive work. or sat around twiddling your thumbs.

You could also enable "hidden" files go into the windows folder and look for the temp folder and other hidden folders that have junk and tmp files in. Do not delete unless you know what you are doing.

I use Total commander for cleaning up junk from all the tmp and sysbackup folders

Treesize is a good call, it should show you what folders, files are using up all the space.
CCleaner is also a good idea, this will remove loads of old temporary files.
With regards to Pagefiles / Virtual Memory I also set the minimum and maximum size to be 1.5 times that of your installed physical memory.
So if you have 3GB (1024mb = 1GB) then your Virtual memory should be set to 4608mb

    3 * 1024 = 3072
    3072 * 1.5 = 4608

Can you let us know what version of Windows you are running?
