    Default Any IOS experts please?

    Hi Guys,

I'm hoping someone can help. Ok to start off with my setup is
    iPad 2 on 5.01 f/w

To begin with I started getting an issue where any app would just automatically shut it self down and go back to home screen. This was tempremental at first and became frequent to a point where the device started rebooting itself. When the problem first developed there hadn't been any new apps installed from app store or cydia.

Initial troubleshooting included rebooting the device, closing apps, and even restoring from a backup, which didnt fix anything. Having all this failed I thought I would do a full restore using 5.1.1 as Cydia has shsh blobs stored up to 6.0.1 according to Tiny Umbrella.

So I attempted this using Redsnow and downloaded the restore ipsw's from iclarified 5.0.1 and 5.1.1. I followed this guide on iclarified iClarified - iPad - How to Downgrade Your iPad 2 From iOS 6.x to iOS 5.x (Windows) and everything went well untill I got to step 17 where I got an error message 'Itunes Error 37' message and now the iPad2 is stuck in DFU mode.

I cant seem to take it out of DFU and attempted to do a 5.1.1 restore by running Tiny Umbrella TSS server, host file entry set as 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
then running iTunes which prompts iPad is in recovery mode to which I hold shift and press 'Restore' and then select the 5.1.1 restore ipsw.

The process keeps failing in preparing iPad for restore (sits there for a bit and then times out) Unknown error 1601.
I've tried disabling AV s/w to no avail and also tried the 'Fix Recovery' option in Tiny Umbrella and I just cant get it out of DFU, best I got it to is to a status 'soft-DFU'

    Can someone help please?

    Much appreciated.

    Regards

Have you tried restore to 6.01 and then trying the whole process again? Worst case is that you couldn't downgrade and you're without a jailbreak.

I could do this as a last resort to have a wroking iPad but I am trying to preserve the jailbreak hence going through this whole process.

I thought of trying this, but could not locate the update .ipsw, where does Redsnow create temp/additional ipsw files? Trying to select any of the restore ipsws, I get an unsupported ipsw message. Havent tried on a mac yet either, dont have one, I guess I could get access to one, but not sure what difference that will make?

Just to add to last post, when Redsnow creates a 5.1.1 ipsw it needs the iPad to be in Recovery mode, as mine is stuck in DFU mode, I cannot continue with the process.

You can downgrade again if you have blobs for 4.xx and 5.xx

yeah I have the blobs, according to Cydia and have also saved them locally via Tiny Umbrella. I think its an iTunes problem, I just installed it on the work laptop and tried a normal restore and it failed with error 1601. I'll try it on a mac.

Ok so what is happening is that iTunes checks with apples servers if your device is "allowed" to restore so if tiny umbrella doesn't fix the problem then there is a way to trick iTunes into thinking your "allowed" when really your not.

First you will need to find the iTunes "hosts" file located at:

    C:Windows\System32\Drivers\ect\

Open the hosts file in notepad and add the following lines to the very bottom of the hosts file:

    74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Make sure you remove any other line that contains gs.apple.com then save the file

Do this all while iTunes is open. Then try the restore. It might not work the first time so you may have to edit the hosts file again(try closing all iTunes processes with task manager then editing the hosts file) once I had to edit it like 10 times before it worked.

Ok so an update I did manage to get it to restore via apple to 6.01 on a mac. I have just realised a crucial step though which is required in downgrading with Redsnow, and that is you actually need a 4.XX blob as well as the 5.XX blob. Now I never had the SHSH at 4.XX for this device as it was always on a 5.XX, does this mean there is no other way for me to downgrade? Thanks for all your input btw!
