    Question Accepting credit/debit cards

    Hi guys,

I'm looking into accepting debit and credit cards and I am trying to get the fee's etc as low as possible. Do you have any suggestions? I was going to use realexpayments but I would still need to use Lloyd TSB cardnet system which pushes the cost skywards.

    Any advice?

The cheapest system should be someone like Cardnet, via a payment system like SagePay. However, getting a merchant account isn't easy these days, which is what you need if you want your charges to be as low as possible.

The determining factor with most providers is your turnover. The higher the turnover the better your rates. It also matters how long you've had a relationship with someone like Cardnet, the longer the relationship and the growth of the business will give you greater leverage when it comes to negotiating fees.

If you are just starting out then PayPal or someone like Worldpay may be more appropriate until you can prove your income stream.

How much roughly does this cost? As I cannot find prices.

Are these online sales or physical sales? There was this card reader recently given out for free, plugs into your iPhone and you can take credit cars payments and I think visa support was coming later. They just take a percentage iirc. May be a place to start?

That's izettle, I've got one of the readers and works fine on my old iphone. You can take payments from visa but it's a bit of a ballache, mastercard works well though.

Barclaycard do a pay as you go option, 3.5% charge but no monthly fee or minimum charge but a one off £50 setup fee. There is a demo site here: http://epdq.bepeyay.com/

It depends on the volume you're doing, you can get lower % if you're doing a reasonable turnover but you have to balance that against the monthly fee (say £25)

We were with Barclaycard for years, for over the phone payments. When we tried to renegotiate better rates we were told to go and get some quotes from elsewhere and then come back to them. Unfortunately for them we did the first bit but found that Streamline were offering not only better rates but would pay the money into our account 1-2 days quicker. So we went over to them and have been very happy since.

If you want the details of our contact at Streamline then pm me mate.

    Thanks to Roach-Rampino

It all depends on volume, the higher the volumes the better rates you can negotiate. Speak to cardnet, if you apply for a merchant account through your bank and can get on with cardnet then you'll find them much more competitive than PayPal. To give you some idea, cardnet currently charge us less than half of what we pay PayPal per transaction.

    PaymentSense looks pretty good
Streamline looks good as well but cannot find any charges
Realex is used by a competitor and from what they have told me they sound great but I'd still need merchant services which is annoying

I had a merchant account once. I didn't have a separate business line, so plugged it into my house line when I needed to take transactions. It was when my missus worked from home. We started getting late night prank phone calls. Drove us mad. Turns out it was the bank dialing into the card machine. But of course it wasn't connected.

Not exactly on topic. But thought it might help someone, and this thread jogged my memory.

    Hey hilljd00,

while I do not quite know about all the local soulutions that you guys in the UK have, I wanted to point you to a payment solution provider that may be offering a few more services (do not know if you need that or not), for example, Credit Card Payment Processing, SEPA Direct Debit, ERP System intergration and so on. It just depends what you need. More info about what you are looking for would help. But you can take a peek yourself:
