Anyone soundproofed a floor to stop airborne noise?

Yeah. Basically. Trying to stop airbourne noise from below coming up. I bought this little place and it needs more work than I realised. I have stripped it back to the floor boards and I can hear every word from downstairs, although they are noisy fuckers. I wanted to stop the noise coming through as much, and hopefully reduce my noise too. TV and Music is all the noise I usually make. I don't want them to hear me practising on the guitar. I am that shit...! lol

I have seen some acoustic sealant for sealing around the edges and in-between the floor boards. I was also considering then laying 3 layers of SBM5 on top. And possibly sticking a decent underlay on top of that. And then carpet.

a really good underlay and carpet. the is soound proofing mats u can get to put wooden floors down onto.. this type of material can work out very expense thoough

How far are you going with the renovations?
Some insulation in the joists would be ideal but it's a big job if you don't need to pull them up for other work.
I'd go with a couple of layers of that SMB5, quality underlay and a thick carpet if there's no need to pull the boards up.

I do need to take the floor boards up to re-wire the place. But the space under the floor is above their ceiling so I am not sure if I am allowed to drop in insulation, and they may possibly remove it in future if they did any renovations.

Expanding foam is your friend!!!! cna easily be removed when dry if required and sound proofing qualities are fantastic.. never done it in a floor tho and may not be possible
You could always do it where there is no wiring/pipes and use something different in those areas
Some pound shops occasionally have the small tins of it

To stop insulation touching their property, putting any pressure on the ceiling below, separate the electrics etc, and hold the insulation in place if they remove the ceiling for renovations, you can get netting to hold it in place.
I'd be surprised if they saw it and wanted to remove it tbh, considering the money it'll save them on the heating bill and the sound proofing it'll give them too.

Reading back on this thread, I have to agree that Expanding Foam is a good 'cheap' alternative to sound proofing.

You just getting that irritating bit of noise around a silly hole? FOAM THE FUCKER!
