MAME on non-jailbroken ipad (be quick)

We don’t normally do news here on PixelBedlam, however here is something that will slip under many people’s radar and something that, if you have a slightly grey moral compass, you should take advantage of. I woke up this morning to news of Mame working on iOS devices, iPad and iPhones that haven’t been jailbroken can now play Arcade Emulator extraordinaire MAME. Gridlee was a game produced in 1982 and the creators have recently ported it to iOS, to do this they used a MAME backend, which can be, shall we say, manipulated. Long story short all those Arcade games you played as a kid you can now play on the go on your iPad without damaging it! Guide starts after the jump -
Quick Guide to Getting MAME on iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch-
1.
Go onto app store and download this game:

Run Gridlee on iOS Device then close it once you have entered a game, just do first level to be sure.
3. (ALTERNATIVE (BETTER) OPTION IS UPDATED AT BOTTOM OF POST)
Download iExplorer to PC or Mac from here (FREE DEMO VERSION IS FINE) :

Plug in iPhone/iPad/iPodTouch to PC/Mac and run iExplorer (iFunbox).
5.
Go to Apps on left hand side and find Gridlee.
6.
Open Gridlee and goto Documents folder.
7.
Open Roms folder and drag Roms from your desktop to the Roms folder (still in Zip Files)
8.
Unplug iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and run Gridlee.
9.
BOOM! MAME is running on your i-Device!

To get the Roms just do a bit of Googling (Romnation is my personal favourite), it’s quite hit and miss as to what works but I have found a number that are great. I wont post up links to Roms as although I am encouraging use of this exploit there’s a line I wont allow PixelBedlam to step across. This app will be taken down by Apple any day now as news spreads SO GET IT NOW!
I’ll update this post with any more information or tips I hear of, but for now, go and give this a try and allow yourself to play excellent arcade games on your iPad!

UPDATE: Whilst the App Gridlee is still on App Store i’ve been looking up what happens if it is removed. I have found a program called iFunbox (found here: http://www.i-funbox.com/) which allows you to produce an .IPA package of said app. This saves it to your computer allowing you to re-install at a later date. iFunBox is also a great alternative to iExplore. Up to you which you use, both are free, iFunBox is generally useful though, transferring files (or roms in this articles case) is just a case of drag and drop.

Thanks, but I think the signing process by apple ties it to your apple ID. So if you sent me your version of it I don't think it would install on my iDevices. It would be being sent everywhere by now if it worked like that.

I imagine it's running the same core as iMAME4All did, which means it's romset 0.37b5

You should have a set newer than that I imagine? If so you just need to run your romset through clrmame with a .dat file from here

MAME4droid & iMAME4all uses only '0.37b5', 'GP2X, WIZ 0.37b11 mame romset'. Use "clrmame.dat" file included in '/var/mobile/Media/ROMs/iMAME4all' or /sdcard '/ROMs/MAME4all/' to convert romsets from other MAME versions to the ones used by this version, using ClrMAME Pro utility, available in next webpage:

So you need to convert your roms for (0.139u1 )

Also, if you're using iFunBox, you can right-click on the app and have it generate an ipa for you, handy for when you want to reinstall it and apple have removed it off the appstore

Well I got this downloaded to my iPhone last night. Copied over a ROM to test and it worked just fine!

I say fine, it was actually shite and unplayable, but the concept worked! On a 3Gs it's just pointless as it just doesn't have the hardware to do it. I hope they don't pull it too quick. I will have a go using my missus 4 at the weekend, but it needs updating to iOS5.1 before it will work, and without going into a long story, that will be ballache for me to sort out first.

What made me laugh tho, was the actual game itself was listed in the Mame menu as video ok, sound fucked! Where as the rom I copied over was video ok and sound ok. (wardener.zip). Just the frame rate was borked from underpowered handset.

Still a sneaky ass way to run mame legit on your iDevice. Bet the app/game gets great reviews! The people responsible for the Mame4IOS might not be happy that their product has been "used" though... Or are they they same ppl

I've converted all my roms to this version and have had no problems with anything yet on an ipad mini. Got about 8500 roms on the ipad now

They did a sneaky release of iMAMEForAll just like this last year which ran MAME 0.37b5 which would have run fine on your 3GS if you get a jailbreak on there it's probably best running that version as this version of MAME is written for highs end devices just like it is on PC's with later MAME versions.

There's usually a romset hanging around on newsgroups somewhere, binsearch or nzbindex will find those if they're still about. Failing that you could google roms4droid and i'm sure it will be easy enough
