Default Problem with F9 factory restore on an ASUS X52F. Keeps looping instead of completing.

Trying to do a factory restore on my girlfriend's son's ASUS X52F. Pressing F9 on boot up and it starts the recovery process by bringing up a select language screen and then and the partition to use. Then says windows is loading files. Then goes to a grey pattern screen for around two minutes before looping back to the select language screen again.

The laptop is less than a couple of years old and came with Win7 installed.

Before I wipe the windows partition or try anything else, Has anyone got any idea what is causing it to loop back in this way instead of completing the factory restore? He believes he has been infected by a virus which has prevented it booting into windows, which is why he wants to restore to factory settings. Could a virus have damaged the factory restore partition or interfered with the restore files? (">

Yes it could have done, it could be an otherwise damaged partition or even a faulty hard drive. Best thing to do is boot to a live cd or connect the HDD as slave to another PC, recover all the data, scan the data for malware.

Next (if you are comfortable doing this) boot to an OS CD and format the drive. If you want to be extra careful you could use dariks boot and nuke to format the drive then insert os cd. Then install a new OS, get the drivers from manufacturer support page and set it up from scratch.

Thanks for the info. You both mention the possibility of a failed drive and it has crossed my mind as well so will run a test on the drive first.

Had years of experience with drive testing, formatting, and partitioning, etc. At this point I would normally use Spotmau power suite to back up the users data and format the drive before reinstalling a copy of windows. Also performed a few low level formats in the past, usually against manufacturers advice, but has worked nine times out of ten. Was just wondering if there was a simple answer to the problem before formatting.

If the drive is phisically ok but the recovery partition is corrupt I may as well delete all partitions and recreate them into a decent C: partition for the operating system and an additional D: partition for data. Just didn't want to do that if there was another way and the recovery data on the drive was ok as it makes recovery easier at a later date. (">

Then stick a decent backup program like acropolis or similair and backit up to DvD. Once made they can restore alot easier if it all goes tits up. I spent 3 days fixing a clients pc. he took it to a shop and they totally screwed up his c drive. his 2nd drive looked like they tried to install windows on it as his c drive was corrupt. took me 2 hours to get rid of and repatition his d drive as he had all his info photos and things on there.

Now up and running a C +D drive is the best way to go, keeping only the OS on C and useing D for games data etc etc

    Thanks to Mickey

Thanks for the advice lads. Finally had time to look at it and it turns out it is the hard drive. He found a set of recovery disks he had made, but after recovery and a reboot it was still caught in the same loop. Used SeaTools to test the Seagate drive. Loads of bad sectors found so run the repair which was apparently successful. Recovery disks installed again only to have the same problem. Another disk analysis with SeaTools revealed the faults were still there although the software had marked them as successfully repaired.

Will remove the drive tomorrow to get the serial number and check the Seagate warranty status. The laptop bought from EBuyer about two years ago so don't know if they will honour the Seagate warranty because it is an oem drive and is probably only covered as part of the one year laptop warranty. Unlucky - seagate will refer you back to OEM.

Rather than use recovery dvd's which will also install all the bloatware, look out for the 48 in 1 copy of windows 7 (can be found in the usual places).

That will let you install a clean copy with your choice of manufacturer and windows edition.

    Thanks to Over Carl
