Default Repairing a metal instrument ?!?!

My daughter currently has flute lessons at school and got a flute given as a gift from family in America.

One of the thin metal bits that link a couple of the valvey thing together somehow became cracked so she is unable to get one of the notes out of the instrument.
A welder would be way too ott for such a delicate fix imho.

Would solder hold it dya reckon or is there some kind of magic liquid weld type stuff out there ????
The piece of metal in question is long and thin but is only about 3 or 4 mm in diameter ...

    Thanks for and advice

Take it to a music shop and get it done properly. Musical instruments are precisely made and if it's done wrong it won't work and the fix will be more expensive.

There may also be a local repairer of musical instruments you could try.

    Ps. Not Valves, just keys

Well, as an owner of two Clarinets, 1 Tenor Saxophone, 3 Guitars and a Piano... I'm thinking from the perspective of an Instrument owner .

You best not hope she really gets into playing it properly because at some point she'll ask for a new one and for a good quality instrument, you're looking at £500 or £600 and then some if she really become proficient

However, fair enough, if she's just taking her first footsteps into playing an instrument then I can understand your reservations at the costs. As for fixing it, couldn't tell you as I've never repaired an instrument. Have a nose around some forums that may be dedicated to those with musical instruments.

My daughter is studying music a university and if any thing is wrong with her instruments she always gets the repair done professionally.
Music is an expensive hobby! Her cornet is insured for £2500, flugal horn is another £1500. Add in the trumpet, piano and flute and you can guess how much it starts to cost.
To upgrade her flute she is looking at around £500 for a new head piece.
You could try giving http://www.mcqueens.com/ a call. I'm not sure if they repair flutes but they are well known for brass repairs.

    Thanks to dibbler

In the meantime, I've used metal Araldite in the past for something like this. It's nice to work with, very strong, can be sculptured into shape and sets smooth like china.

JB Weld is seriously strong. I've got a laptop that I dropped and broke the magnesium chassis where the hinge attaches for the screen on on side. Fixed it about 18 months ago and still going strong. Not easily revertable though. Also the stick weld is useless, only use the original version.

Never having done something like this, I'm thinking a pro repair might be a better idea.

Hmmm, as she it only effects one note and only occasionaly I might suggest she copes for now and if she is still keen in a few weeks, I will get it done....
You know what 12 year olds can be like... dont wanna shell out £50/£60 quid and she gets bored in 2 weeks ;-)

Thanks 4 all advice guys. As always much appreciated.

on a saxophone, most of the bits are "stuck on" with solder so should do job well if metal to metal . If not why not try a local welder that brazes it may be a simple job. Assuming you cant braze yourself and are not bothered bout the metal being tarnished since varnish will obviously melt as well around fix

    Thanks to joeninety0
