Default Route 66 tips and tricks

Just been chatting tonight about a big holiday and we quite fancy doing Route 66. I've done little research on this yet but suffice to say it looks like Chicago to Los Angeles. Or other way round. Has anyone done it? How did you go about it? What route? Do it off your own back or a self drive organised holiday? Cheers in advance

Did this last year Chicago to LA with a cpl days at the Grand Canyon and in Vegas

We booked one from a fly drive booklet thing in the local althams travel agents they gave us a list of all the hotels and stuff then we got them to upgrade some of them and cancelled some others and booked our own. We also upgraded the car to something a little quicker when we picked it up in Chicago.

We pretty much followed the route from a book EZ66 by Jerry McClanahan which was decent and took you past pretty much everything you would want to see.

Yep it was an awesome holiday - by far the longest day driving we did was from Chicago to St Louis just over 300 miles but it took around 10 hours with all the stopping off at places on the way / getting lost etc

When we got to the rental place they were trying to give us a Toyota Corolla or something and had no proper muscle cars available so we ended up with a Dodge Charger 3.6 V6 was ok - would probably try and sort something better out if I was to do it again

I guess your spending more time in that than anything else so a good choice is needed. As always I guess it's comfort v cost
