It's scenes with motion that really show things up - screen grabs are not a good indicator - unless you watch a stationary film :-)Sky hd looks great lot of the time but you can see the compression fall on its arse compared to a Blu ray when it gets busy . Mp3s are similar - they do a great job with simple material but with more complex passages of material lots of detail is lost

Indeed. Although a lot of this degradation can be improved on with better encoding and more knowledge of how the codec works. By reducing the video bandwidth you will always loose some quality. I just don't think most peoples eyes (or tvs) will make this a big concern. Especially with the space savings of these smaller vids.

In all honesty if you are that much of a stickler for the quality I would say buy the BluRay instead of download as you will always get a lower quality video from a download compared to a true BluRay.

I have a number of BluRays that look exceptional. One that sticks in my head is Star Trek. It looks no less than stunning on BluRay and I downloaded the 1080p MKV of it which clocked in at around 12 gig I think and you could see a subtle difference. The BluRay looked like it had just had a fresh coat of polish

Or download the 'remux' version as it's the untouched blu-ray streams wrapped up in an mkv.

Or even download the full bluray and pull the .m2ts file out. Dropping in at anywhere up to 60gb though you wouldn't want to do that every time, only for a real nice looking film... Something like Avatar for example
